Very nice job!
Have you thought about making a, How to, video of your work?
@ Goldendog
Do you mind me asking where you purchased your chess board on the first page?
A link would be perfect!!!
It was made by a guy I met on eBay. A 2.5" of maple and walnut, pretty carefully made for about $60. Unfortunately he used timber that was not well-seasoned and it started warping after a few months.
Badly enough that I used it for firewood. Too bad because it was a very nice companion to both my 4" Collector and Collector II.
I can't recommend the guy (quite a nice fellow, btw) for this work, for obvious reasons.
I never replaced the 2.5-incher and use my HOS Rosewood/Sycamore/Mahogany 2-3/8" for those 4" sets. Not bad but 2.5" is the perfect size for the Collector, and I miss the old board.
Here's the 2-3/8" veneer board+Collector:
Here's a unique board, with Dreuke analysis pieces (2-1/2" king).
I had a leathermaker fabricate the two-piece leather board (1-1/2" squares) and I made the frame out of teak.
It's a very pleasant small footprint setup to use.

I've thought about it, however most of the original designs came from this book, plus the author has some videos..
The design you see above I put together myself with visio, then cut, sanded, finished, etc.

True - just look at BigLew's crinkled green vinyl board previous page.
Excuse me, Please read and look at that post again (#27 ) that is a genuine leather board yes it is roll up and it does have a little curling but that is part of the appeal and charm of playing on real authentic cow hide! It is a tan colored soft leather with Forest or Hunter green dark squares.
If it's a leather board, where's the fur trim? Sorry, I'm a man of the 70's and always expect to see fur trim on leather items. I'm sure you'll be of the same mind after seeing the following picture:
Or maybe I just can't read.

Love that hat!
And the Knights! Gotta make sure they're facing the proper direction, and you can find various opinions as to which direction that is. I like to start out with mine facing back at me so my opponent just gets the back end of the horse.
I have nothing even remotely resembling the beautiful sets you guys posted, but here goes (clockwise from top right):
1) Possibly my first acceptable tournament set, all wood, number 5 Staunton standard. Solid, heavy pieces. Poor knight detail & quality. Feels good in play.
2) Plastic set on a cardboard board (yes, I know...). Big pieces, but surprisingly light, they wobble uncomfortably.
3) Possibly the best magnetic set I've ever had. Great magnet strength. The pieces are plastic-ish, have a weird coarse feel. Quite heavy too.
4) A traditional local design. Extremely light wooden pieces, they seem to bounce when placed on a square. Zero noise during play.
#4 is beautiful - the queens are facinating. I love Polish chess sets; Yellow Mountain Imports has a few that I've been drooling over. I dig Russian and Yugo sets, too. How come I always end up with these unexpectedly expensive hobbies?

As the old wizard said, "The question is the answer!"
Wow, cool thread! I made my set in the garage one summer. Scroll saw cut in African Padauk and Zebrawood. The marble table my wife found at a used furniture store.
Enjoy!
More of my set pics are in my account.
