Very nice set and enjoyable video. Thanks for going the extra step.  You are also very talented. Fantastic job in making the pawn.

@ EfimLG47 Your website is awesome.  I'll spend a few days exploring it.

I looked at all your Philippine sets and noticed several common features  they share with mine.  My favorite was your oversize 7" set.

Regarding the Philippine chess sets:

Narra = Burl wood for white pieces
Kamagong = Rosewood for black pieces

The set I learned chess on 48 years ago. It was my dad’s - he made the case and board!

Wow,Woldsman....It really has to be a gratifying feeling to play on that set.....and.....

You certainly are a fine player.

Good luck

Could not pass this one up as the price was on the cheap. I love collecting different varieties of these small button sets. I once passed up one brand new in a store, selling at $10 at the time from West Germany. I have seen one since for sale but the bidding went too high.

This Gem is in MINT condition. I know it's been shown on here before but I thought I would just show people you can still get a 50-year-old set that is in like-new condition and for a very reasonable price if you keep looking. I copied the photo from the eBay listing bought it from, was a buy it now.  The flower did not come with it!!  evil.png

I used to see that quite often,a while back....Nice little study/travel set.

a practical travel/analysis set must have a place for captured pieces and must allow the position to remain as is when closed and traveling.  That means no folding boards with the playing surface on the outside.  […]  Oh, and it's also nice to have a set where the pieces don't dislodge themselves from the holes when turned upside down with lid closed.

1. This thread has been a treasure.
2. Does anyone have recommendations for a contemporary travel set that meets these criteria?

Hi guys, I'm new to both chess and collecting travel chess sets but I bought something cool and practical online. It fits in my hand. I got this second hand and I was wondering how old this set is.

@minellona, see post numbers 23 and 322 for more on this set. It is still in production and sold by Shoptaugh Games at Shoptaugh games.com.

Well, that really is a shame. I wanted something that will last for years 😅. Maybe I'll find a better set next time

Magnetic Set! (chessusa) Certainly not as cool as the vintage sets being posted in this thread but figured I'd share a picture of something new that someone could easily buy online.

Hi everyone,

I've got a whittington chess set I bought a couple of years ago, unfortunately it lacks a few original bone pieces; I have some plastic ones as substitues which work just fine, but if I could find the missing ones for a reasonable price it would look much better... any idea where I could find some spares?

3 white pawns, 3 red paws and 1 red knight.

Also, any idea of possible cost if I could find any?

Thanks!

Cheers, Matteo

woldsman

Sometimes Whittingtons come up for auction with missing pieces. That looks your best option.

I have a 23 inch Drueke board with a burned or etched dark logo on the back side. Does this date it somehow?

great idea for mementos

Krames

best magnetic travel set I've found, i use it all the time at home and or on the road . . .

I put it in front of the laptop for some perspective

Krames

sorry they're sideways, don't know why that happens sometimes . . .

@Krames, that is my favorite magnetic/portable set too. It's perfect for desktop analyses while on the go.
