Hey @BrothertheCloud - lovely sets, thanks for posting. I love that you purchased your Phillipines set when you were there many years ago. I was able to buy one via Holger Langer in Germany recently and I love it’s rugged simplicity. 👍

I've got three of those Philippine Staunton sets myself, all through eBay Classifieds. One, the largest, i bought from the same source as Holger Langer (the son of an engineer who had a couple hundred of them made in the 1970s in the Philippines to sell them back home, but never did), one a APF Rolland-imported set which was officially sold in Germany in the 1970s also (in one of those dreaded faux-croco boxes), and finally one which i got real cheap together with a lovely RPF zebrano ebony board , also from someone whose dad had died. I expected the latter to be an Rolland-imported set also, but the size is different yet again and also the proportions vary a litttle bit. There seem to be many minor variations out there.

It's a lovely style, I just wish any of them were weighted for better playability. wink.png

Got a few new sets.....a cheap color glass one ( "Hey happy birthday! We know you love chess! Look at what we got you!" ) lol. At least it wasn't the boring all the same glass no color one that is everywhere. Civil war chess set. A fantasy Crystal set that I really like. Pieces are really heavy and well detailed in pewter, and it is one of the few chess sets with each pawn uniquely diffferent from each other. The next one is a pewter Lewis Chessmen set. Small but heavy pieces that took me a while too track down. The last one is a African Padauk set that I receive from Designer Chess. Been wanted one with Padauk wood for a long time and pretty happy with the set.

Hahahahaha. I laughed out loud at "hey we know you love chess". The thing is, that set is so tacky it has somehow transformed in to something cool. Your last set is incredible!

Finally received a custom board I ordered from Colorado Woodworker, to go with my Australis 2022 set from Oldset. So now I have an actual, tournament-sized set. Woot!

The board I got is made from walnut and wenge, comprises 4 sections that attach magnetically, and can be inserted into a separate frame. 2.25” squares.

Pure class! I like the contrast of the pieces and board.

The board is absolutely beautiful on its own but I love your pieces on it as well - the board doesn't compete for attention with the pieces but instead provides a wonderful backdrop.

Thanks for the kind words!

I do like lower-contrast boards, so took a gamble with the walnut-wenge combo, which I haven’t seen used in other boards.

Colorado Woodworker was also kind enough to re-do the board for a small fee, when the first version had very obvious (and to my eye, unattractive) grain in the wenge squares. I’m super glad it was redone with a different sample of wenge wood, which had the subtle, even grain that I was looking for.

I could use a little help. I THINK this might be a wood Drueke set, but I can’t match the board to anything on the internet. I picked it up at one of those “pay by the pound” thrift stores. I will include a photo.

Is this still the main thread for seeing everyone's lovely chess sets?

Needed a slightly smaller playing set for my office desk (one that fits on a 5cm square size board), and went for another nice, competitively priced set from Chessshop.eu in the Czech Republic, this time in 3.75" king's size (Boxwood & acacia). Cheaper than from India directly, good quality.

They changed the design of the set, the "Stallion", slightly from what's depicted on their homepage. The pieces are double weighted.

Looks really good to my tastes.

Really lovely set. I like the look of different wood grain for black and white pieces.

After years of searching, I finally located an original 1950'S/60's all-wooden Soviet Grandmaster set for a sensible price.

Nothing unusual here, but I made the board: (no idea why it flips my pictures)
