To me it looks like the elves did well! From what I can see everything looks good and the knights appear very consistent. I remember you were pretty concerned - are you pleased with the end result?

Regarding photos, I take all my photos with my phone, transfer them to my computer, "edit" them by simply rotating each photo all the way around, saving the not-really-edited photo, and only then posting it. "Works for me...YMMV."

Yes, I think the elves dd well and I am pleased with the end results.

What did you use to edit the photos?

They are the HOS Grandmaster set. I think they are fine for an under $300 chess that includes board and box.

It's the "Preview" app on a Mac used to rotate photos from an iPhone. Maybe someone using a Windows/Android combination will be along soon and contribute their trick.

Crop the photo very slightly and replace the sideways one with the cropped.

For instance

I've already found a way to fix it. See my posts after the one you quoted. Thanks.

I know, but I think I will just leave them alone for right now.

Bet they’re nicely weighted too. They look terrific! I hope they’ll inspire some fun time on the board.

I started playing chess just recently, and it was great opportunity to find nice set.
Criteria I had were
-wooden, classical pieces (not dragons, knights, vikings, animals)
-2nd hand, vintage
-no crosses on kings, but also soviet sets were the last option to consider
-if possible - nice knights.
So the first one I got on flea market for 40 PLN (about 10 EUR). This was made in Poland, probably somewhere in the '60s. Based on other similar sets being sold online - these were producent by 'Spółdzielnia Pracy Inwalidów' - state run cooperatives employing people with disabilities to produce all kinds of stuff. As you can see these are kind of modernist (?) in style, mostly made on rotary lathe with carving of the knights being reduced to minimum. Also one of black pawns has en passant'd his way through quality control. But it's this kind of little details that I love about used/vintage items. I re-felted them, they're nice to play with, quite small and light (pictured on 40mm squares) but well balanced.

My other set is Bundesform, found on ebay. This I believe (and hope) were made post-war, Knights came weighted with some small magnets, but kings and queens did not, and they were really easy to tip over. So I weighted those pieces using washer, nut and fishing leads (drilling out the bottom and adding over 15g of metal really made the difference), re-felted all the other pieces and here they are.

This set also has some imperfections - one of the black pieces wasn't clear coated or finished in some othe way properly and looks more like a dried raisin.
What's next? I'm looking for:
-Vienna coffee house set. Ideally something really old, worn down by years of play.
-Calvert or St George set, with tulip-like bishops
-some other sets form Eastern bloc countries and Yugoslavia . One exception from 'No Russian' rule is Valdai Nobles set.

Wonderful! I have 3 sets purchased in Poland over a 30-year period - the Poles have their own style. And great work adding weight.

There are always vintage Valdai Nobles sets from Ukraine available on ETSY and eBay. There are some Ukraine makers on ETSY that are very reliable, if you are open to quality new sets (RetroMaximun and ERWoodLeather). I’ve purchased from 5 vendors in Ukraine - no problems.

You’ll also see some vintage sets from vendors in Hungary. I haven’t got experience there.

Thanks. I think most common style produced in Poland is still 'folk' (lots of pyrography on pieces and boards) and other designs go under the radar. Adding weight was easier than I thought, even without bench drill.
Etsy definitely has something for me, I'll have to handle horrible UX of it.

I posted this set a couple of years ago when it was set up for a tournament game. As a consequence of the post, I learned the set was much older than I thought. I had thought 1960s, but it dates from the 1930s.

As I’m in the process of moving into a larger house with a second building, I now have space that will be wholly dedicated to chess—essentially 1/4 of what was a large wood shop. My computer table the past 30+ years has been a WWII hatch cover from a Liberty ship that I propped on two file cabinets. This morning, I put legs on it to use as a chess table in the new space.
