I find about 1 set out of 3 that are not warped. Some times I will purchase sets and replace the warped ones. The warped ones make good wood for repairing chipped pieces.
Agreed, although colour/tone can be an issue when replacing pieces.

Original Lardy given to me as a Christmas gift in the 1960s. The board is a modern Rechapados Ferrer made with African birch and bird's-eye maple.
Nice! Those old french sets really look good. And that one doesn't even seem to have any "leaners".
Thanks. The white queen and one white bishop lean but you can't see that due to the angle of the photo. I don't usually notice the lean when I'm using the set. My favorite pieces in the set are the knights. I was reading a review of the HOS Lardy set in this forum and someone mentioned that no company has yet come up with a faithful reproduction of them in a modern wood set. I would probably buy one if it were produced.
ChessEmpire on ETSY have produced an excellent reproduction of a 3 1/2" (size 5) Lardy which is the best I've seen. But not a size 6.
Looks very like this original https://www.etsy.com/ie/listing/775772199/french-chess-set-k9cm-with-luxury-wooden. Unfortunately finding an original without warped pieces is difficult.
Thanks but if I were to buy another Lardy I would be looking for black pieces with a 3.75" king. An original would either have to be a pristine set or a low priced set with fully intact pieces that need refinishing.
Someone takes their audio seriously!
Great too see. I grew up in a time of big speakers and powerful amps, and now it seems it has all been replaced with portable blue tooth devices ☹️
Now is the worst time for buying chess products because of coronavirus pandemic. The virus can stay on objects for up to ten days and can also be transferred during packaging, handling and shipment.

Ha Ha, that an those soundbars.
Two things......First off(since we can use some plain old fun,to get our collective minds off all of the dread) loved the Klipsch sound set up.
Gorgeous hobby room, with the chess set collection and the audio/video.Here's one guy who will have no problems hunkering down and being entertained.-
I, too, was a fanatical audio buff for decades(Jeff Rowland.Audio research, big Infinity and Avalon speakers) but the recession of 2008,along with my daughter's wedding and not wishing to lay off any employees caused me to sell the stuff.Very pricey stuff and a huge hassle when something went down.....but....now technology is catching up,as there are fabulous smart systems where you can stream great sounding music, for not a huge amount of money.....I'd never have believed it,in my audiophile days......Got a stereo pair of Sonos Play 5 generation 2's and coupled them with the Sonos sub woofer. Can get virtually anything on my phone in fabulous sound.....Thrilled and not a huge cash outlay......Rant over.
As for the virus...my son is an infectious disease specialist. The above comments are pretty accurate. His advice is to stay away from people or at least keep 6 feet away if you must go out.He is overwhelmed right now,in his work place, but on the cutting edge of what's going on.From what i have been told, the potential vaccine will most likely take a year.
I cannot see or kiss my 5 young grand children. That is really hard for my wife and myself.....Like all of you folks,it is best to be vigil and have consideration for older folks.I feel deeply sorry for those who have lost employment.Hopefully the government will step up....They better!
Life has changed for us all,but if one must stay at home,at least we have modern technology to keep us entertained.....Hopefully this will all end and life could resume as normal.
Wishing "all of you" the best!
Btw,since we've gone off topic for a bit(sorry).....
My wife and I were sitting in our car having a cup of coffee.....We saw a suspicious looking guy,in a hood, waiting around.....Suddenly,a car pulled up and the driver asked if the hooded guy had the cash.
The hooded guy handed him a wad of dollar bills......The driver reached back.....and.....handed the hooded guy a roll of toilet paper! Bada-Bing!
I recently bought this old wooden 30cm set from a Ukrainian seller. Its no fine set, and the pieces are a little big, but I love the fact it is worn and dinged and many battles have been played on it. The seller's description stated it was 1960s. I'm going to use it for pub games.
I like those old Soviet era sets. It's not easy finding one in decent condition.
Me too, I feel a collecting bug coming on. Those pocket Simza sets are cool too, if expensive.
If this set really is 1960s it would have come through the Cold War years, and is a little bit older than me ...

LOL Get your wallet ready. I like the Soviet/Russian sets. The ones with wood knights are even a little harder to find. Their was a guy here called goodnightmike and he had some awesome sets.
I'm looking to get rid of some of my duplicates. A lot of them are in very good condition, and some are still in the original boxes. I'm more than happy to part with them for a fair price - ie much less than the Etsy dealers! I even have a couple of tournament sized ones with wooden knights. Drop me a line if you're interested and I'll ping over some pictures of what I've got.

Thanks for the heads up, I'd be interested to see what you've got, especially smaller sets like the 30cm boxes, if you have any. I'm holding on to my ££ during this 'no work' period but all being well I'd be interested once things return to normal. Cheers.

I've got quite a few smaller ones. Definitely understand not wanting to spend any cash right now! The current situation will also affect my ability to send it, as I often source sets for people in the UK, and I tend just to post them by Royal Mail after bringing them back in my hand baggage. I'm in St Petersburg right now with no prospect of visiting the UK any time soon, and posting it back would be expensive relative to the cost of the set. Anyway, drop me a line at johnmoyes78@gmail.com, and I'll send some pics over.
@levelmatt - just seen the pics of your Soviet set. That's a cracker. How big is the board? Lovely wooden knights, wooden finials on the kings and queens as well. Early 60's I reckon, though I'm no expert.

Thanks for your thoughts John, really good! Its a 30cm square board.
I'll drop you a note via email shortly, no rush but definitely interested in acquiring similar sets in time. Cheers mate.
