I prefer the design of the knight from the House of Staunton!
I own the Imperial Set. The design is okay if you set the pieces on the board, but I dislike them for the practical play.
Just out of curiosity, what do you dislike about the Imperial set for practical play? Personally, I prefer sets with a bit of heft, or if they're under 3.5", stout! When I grab a piece I like it to fill the hand. Skinny pieces eat Whimpy burgers!

The finish on that board is outstanding, what an amazing set- simply stunning chess set
What year are the pieces bro- have you a link ?
Those fat Rooks and the wide cut on the Bishops mitres are insane !!!!
Thats my perfect choice for a Staunton set.
Yes, that is one nice chess set
I just won this chess set from a local on line auction. I think I really got an awesome deal. The board is 19.75" X 19.75". It has drawers for the pieces and is quite heavy. The edging is leather. The kings are 5.25" tall. When I bid on it, I didn't know it was that big.
Do any of you know who the maker might be? What was the original cost for the set?
Sorry about the pictures not being right way round.
I believe the BCC Imperial is one of the most desired* chess sets. Although I haven't got one as it is very expensive, I posted the link plus images below! **
*By desired I mean that people would get it if it was cheaper
** Nobody buys these things because it is so costly, but I thought I would share it anyway.
Link: https://www.houseofstaunton.com/bcc-imperial-series-luxury-chess-pieces-camaratta-collection-44-king.html -> This can total to about $2,500+ (for board + pieces (pieces are $895, but the board is much more pricey))
If you want just the pieces for cheaper, check out: https://www.ebay.com/itm/The-BCC-Imperial-Series-Luxury-Chess-Pieces-The-Camaratta-Collection-4-4-/263417730064 -> You will get the pieces for $795, about 100 dollars cheaper.

Here's a wooden version of that set.

I actually prefer this style BCC set from Staunton Castle and for a lot less money (around $300)!

Compare this to an original 1890-1895 set.
@StauntonCollector Do you have a link to that beautiful board? It is stunning. I know it's the Spanish Board Maker but can not seem to find it online anywhere.

Under this link you will find the exact board that StauntonCollector posted. The glossy finish is not visible on the product photos.
The day before yesterday I disposed of this board at StauntonCollector. It is so terrible in terms of shine that I should actually have given him money to take it.
The figures 1849 from Post 993 are also available from Stauntoncastle, URL:

There it is stated that the base is 1.5 ", but that's not true. The base is 41mm and the Stauntoncastle set corresponds exactly to the Chessbazaar set. The Chessbazaar set is a bit heavier.
I generally prefer Stauntoncastle because of the excellent quality, but here I have to say that both sets are equally noble.
I got into a bitter argument with my friend StauntonCollector about whether these pieces fit better on a 50 or 55 mm board. He thinks they fit better on a 50mm board, while I find that too crowded. These look wonderful on a 55mm board. I would like to hear more opinions on this.
I prefer the design of the knight from the House of Staunton!

@StauntonCollector I am curious too. Why do you not like the Imperial set for play?
Also, I received the CB 1849 set. I believe someone said the queen and bishop look like someone put a heavy weight on them. I would have to agree with him except for some reason I just love the fatness of the pieces. They feel really good to move them around the board.
About the Imperial pieces.
As always in life, individual tastes are difficult to discuss. I don't like the design of the knight anymore, of course there's nothing wrong with the workmanship!
Congratulations on the purchase of the CB 1849 set. This is a really wonderful chessboard!!!!

There is no right answer. It all comes down to personal preference.
A 41mm king would occupy 82% of a 50mm square and 74.5% of a 55mm square. And although the 55mm board would be more in alignment with FIDE and USCF regs, if you prefer a cozier arrangement, by all means, go with the 50mm board. My preference would be the 55mm board, but hey, that's me.
Some folks need some room to breathe.
Others like it snugly.
In bygone days, it seems like the old masters preferred a crowded house.
(And super tall pawns!)

Exactly! Some old soviet sets were huge (110mm+) and yet often came in a folding box board with squares of 45mm or so. I think MCH818 photo above shows a perfect fit. Not sure what size board that is but it really suits those pieces.
I'm not a rated player and, at my age, it's highly unlikely I'll become one. So I'll never be playing in a USCF or FIDE rated tournament where the style or dimensions of my chess sets would ever be called into question. So I bring to the chess club those sets I like to play with. If anyone takes issue with that they can play with somebody else, but no one ever has. . .at least not yet!
lou: Everyone can be a rated player. Although most people will likely hide the fact taht their rating is in the triple digits only. Regardless, a rating is a rating.
@chessroboto, while everyone CAN be a rated player, not everyone wants to be one, or to play in tournaments so they can acquire one. And a rating does not necessarily reveal a player's strength... just ask anyone who has run into a 1800 player in the open section of a tournament who cleans a master's clock over the board. There are people who sandbag deliberately. That's why USCF established rating floors for long time members.
