There are several options, first there is a somewhat older game, Online Chess Kingdoms, from Konami. There is also a recently released Chessmaster: The Art of Learning from Ubisoft. I own the Chessmaster one and find it enjoyable, I just wish it would let me play online on infrastructure mode, and there is no option to just play yourself, so if you're trying to go through the moves of a game, you're pretty much out of luck. It does let you set up positions to play against the computer however. There is also a homebrew chess program you can download, I don't know how difficult it is to do that though. If you search for PSP chess homebrew on google, you should get some hits.

I've got them both...  Chessmaster is far better in my opinion.

If you do not have Custom Firmware on your psp you will not be able to get the chessmaster for free especially on a 3000 as they are unhackable at the moment. Upgrade your psp to 6.20 and you will have access to the games store via PSP ( You must have internet on your psp/ wireless modem wherever your living !). You can purchase the game and it will download onto your memory stick for pretty cheap ( Cheaper than buying a game in a shop ).

Hope that helps
