Reproduction and Real Jaques of London Chess Set

Sort:
EZY1981

The competition was a genuine post, it offered an exceptional antiqued/ebony set, there are only 2 of these sets available and both are for competition purposes only. If anyone on here wants to be a part of this competition then visit our website https://www.officialstaunton.com and follow the facebook link to our page where you will find the competition is running.

Hummmmmm Just went to the website you listed and read the standard blurb and came across this gem:

"During our 20 years service, we have also been privileged to have supplied Linley at Belgravia, The Savoy London and TV show The Apprentice." I damn sure would not say that to loud -- just in case you have not heard, Donald J. Trump is a wee not popular over here across the pond. Now if he gets arrested and thrown in jail and spends the rest of his life play chess with one of your superb sets, that would be note worthy. Hehehehehehe.  OK back to business: How do I enter this contest?? What are the RULES?? What type of set is being offered? I don't have an "Instagram" account, "Twitter", or any of that other stuff and my visit to the "Official Staunton Chess Company" had no mention of a contest.  Would you be so nice to tell us how to enter and what the set is?

Thanks.

GM-4U, I appreciate that you’re advertising, building a business and trying to promote yourself to your customer base; there are a lot of folks here that, I am sure, buy your sets and really like them. BUT, if you’re going to put yourself and your wares on here, it’s a risk you take that someone takes a shot at you. This isn’t the first time and it won’t be the last. Disclaimer, I am friends with Alan and Frank and a whole host of others.

take a read ....

That was about the Leuchars set I own being used as a model for your sets, right?

Hmm, there seems to be a problem with my chess.com account - as a diamond member, I shouldn't be seeing adverts but this thread appears to be full of them

Funniest post I’ve seen in awhile!

Thanks Bronco! It seemed to cause more anger than amusement though meh.png

Was this modelled off the high def photos I sent through to you?

No, those images were fantastic but inaccessible due to hardware failure

It looks artificially aged.

I can't say I like the effect much myself, but I find the "original condition" or "unrestored" 19th century Jaques sets you see around that look like they have been sanded and varnished or worse, partly sanded, but whose knights are darker and have a more battered finish than the rest of the set, much more distressing.

Why not distressed chess sets? It's all the vogue, so strike a pose and make your move, buddy!

Fair enough Greg....But the design is spot on 😉

Sure, no argument about the design.  My point was that unnaturally clean and shiny 19th century sets are more of a worry than your taste in finishes.  You can make more, antiques are a finite resource.

Looks a very harmonious set Carl. As always the antiquing is not quite my cup of tea but I like the relative shapes of the pieces. I also noticed you do not offer the 1851 any longer. Is that because of the more expensive set developed by Corky Staunton?

Sorry I have to agree with this statement. For a NEW set this set looks dirty. If I am going to shell out good money I don't want a set that looks as though someone threw in dirt or something then covered with shellac or poly. If you want to give it the "aged" look at the very least give it a CLEAN aged look.

Thanks for your opinion. We offer a diverse range that meets with expectations to the wider audience. Therefore we offer many configurations not limited to the distressed range. You can see here by following this link we offer as you suggest a clean antique look

I've often wondered about the common sense of people. There is something about "A FOOL and his MONEY are soon parted". I have REAL distressed jeans ie I bought them NEW and then simply stared wearing holes in them. Maybe I can wash them real well, throw in some starch, and sell as NEW Distressed Jeans.. As to the chest of drawers, even my worst crap looks better than that. Yeah, "A FOOL and his MONEY are soon parted.
