For 2k you can get the real deal.

Yeah exactly.

I’m glad I don’t have anything at all on owning a Reproduction Staunton set.

I’m also glad that I am relatively cheap when it comes to buying Chess sets.

The most I have paid for any Chess set is $600, complete.

Even, 😳, $1000 is way out of my price range, let alone $2000.

For $2000 one can buy a genuine vintage Jaques of London made by English craftsmen instead of an artificial copy made  in India.

hi

It's clear that there are plenty of options to buy very decent chess pieces albeit from house of Staunton or from Frank's antique website, then you have the eBay Indian sellers and recently staunton castle, and the chess empire so called manufacturers who sell direct at retail, go figure.

Anyhow just a heads up to say we are no longer shipping to the USA or Canada, we are concentrating our offers with Europe only.

Good luck and stay safe everyone

I'm really sorry to hear that, but I certainly understand why. Between the conversion rate between  pounds sterling and dollars, and the shipping charges, it makes it difficult for you. Smarter decision to stay in Europe, I think, but we'll miss those top quality sets from Official Staunton. Your production values have always been excellent, and your customer service is top notch. Best of luck to you in the future... hope you dominate the market over there!

I would like to echo those sentiments. I only purchased one set of pieces from you and now regret not having bought more. The one that I do have has been on my table for a while and I use it daily playing through games. At least I can still window shop at your website.

I asked before but I'll ask again.  Does it make sense to argue about who was first, when Jaques of London was first and never stropped doing what they do.  The rest just copied jaques.  No innovation in that. what am I missing?

I'm not sure either.  There's this bizarre trend lately where these same people make lengthy posts trying to pump up Frank to this higher degree and it doesn't make sense.  He wasn't the first to make anything.

There is no trend, let alone a bizarre trend.

Frank Camaratta is already at the higher level on his own for many years.  No pumping is necessary.

And he was, and continues to be, the first to make many things.

These are facts whether you like him or anyone else or not.

You are essentially correct in asserting that FC was not the first to make quality wooden chess sets in the Jaques style. He was responsible, however, for reintroducing those quality sets to the market in the 90s. I remember being very frustrated at the level of set available in the early 90s and was thrilled to find the Collector set advertised in Chess Life (pre-internet days!). The quality of this set was far beyond anything that was available back then and his customer service was top class. So he did raise the bar. Even today FCs replicas are generally accurate copies and often include a photo of the set being copied (I think this should be mandatory for all repros!😊).

You only have to look at all the cheaply veneered chess caskets and boxes that OS, HOS, CB, CM etc sell to see that none of these companies have an interest in true quality.

@Minarima could you please share some more photos of your Jaques set? On the Jaques of London website they have actually no pictures of the pieces. Just a photo of them in the coffer.

@EZY1981 I have sent you a message.

You won't be dissapointed,  House of Staunton continue to offer superb sets with decent prices given they actually pay taxes unlike the opposition from pricecutter wannabe American or Canadian Indian imposters who have all applied for citizenship

You're missing the salient issue, I'm not a racist at all but I am against Indians pretending to reside in the USA Canada UK etc, however ship from India....those of us who are actually based in those example country's have to factor in taxes and vat and we are the ones who pay taxes to the country we are actually registered in to trade..  so no my friend, this is nothing to do with race at all

EZY1981

Ah it was probably my fault, it seems one cannot mention dodgy Indian dealers on this platform because it opens up the veins of business ethics and morals, and well let's face it, no one here, or at best perhaps only a handful give a damn about it, so long as they get a good deal... so anyhow, house of Staunton,  the chesshouse, wholesale chess, and all those fine USA companies all are legitimate tax payers, their prices may be higher for obvious reasons

"An Indian country"? That would be India then

Wow, what happened here?

Everybody just chill the dickens out. Enjoy the chess sets. Buy from who you want. We all like and enjoy the same thing. An innocent hobby should not lead to such bitter feuding. Peace out.

You're new here. Read the whole of this thread - if you can spare a couple of weeks. This is traditionally the angriest thread on chess.com! And that's just the way we likes it
