Hey, if anyone wants to spend £1500-1650 GBP ($2000-2200 usd) for a Jaques set, Tim Millard at Antique Chess Shop is fully stocked. Just got an eMail from them about updated inventory.

Hummmm. These sets are far better than what you can buy on Fleabay, PLUS the set you receive has already been repaired so you don't have to send it out to be restored, PLUS you get ALL the pieces PLUS you get an evaluation of what the real price is worth for insurance purposes. If you just have to HAVE one of these Jaques sets, this is probably the way to go.

£1500-1650 GBP ($2000-2200 usd) for a set of fully-restored, +100 year old chess pieces is no joke. I'll have to put on my big boy pants to consider these.

Lot#2044 is from 1865. To put that in perspective, in 1865 the American Civil War just ended. These aren't just old. We're talking, "Abraham Lincoln era" old.

All that matters is are you happy with what you have what you buy. Others opinions in the end….:)

Very true!

Your set looks lovely. I’m sure it will bring you many years of happiness. Post some pics when you get a chance.

@shawnlawler, I think you are going to be very happy with the set when you get it. Don’t listen to the doubters… you’ll find it absolutely authentic. It looks like a fine set in great condition for its age. It’s +/- a hundred years old (1915-1925).

From this particular seller and with the pains he takes to give you a well maintained set, these are worth it.

I'd never have thought I'd say that, but these lots look fantastic.

Not to mention the historical value.

Since I mentioned Tim's site with his restocked Jaques inventory 2 days ago in this thread, his oldest and most expensive set SOLD for a whopping £1850 gbp ($2,505.82 usd). The "Abraham Lincoln era" set.

Lot#2044. Year 1865-1870.

It is crazy times for chess stuff. Frank's CA site use to have 3-4 pages of antique and vintage sets. Last I checked there was only 1 page of stuff.

I can understand that baby going fast.

When it comes to something really,"really old"(like myself) I often wonder..."who's hands have touched this thing and what was their life like?"

So cool!

From the description, "Has one replacement black knight which weighs lighter than the others."

That's a tough pill to swallow. Most everything on a vintage set can be fixed or restored. But a replacement Knight piece? I guess if the price is right, most any Jaques set with stamped King, and labeled box will find a home.

You’d be surprised how many vintage sets have replacements either from another period set or custom recreation the savvy restorer will build a match that does in most respects matches it’s counterparts. It seems like even weightIng would come into play.I remember Alan Dewey replaced a rook in a set that had been used as a tournament prize and as I recall when the dust settled the winning bid was quite atmospheric.

I bought this set a couple of weeks ago for about £1300. I noticed the Knight was a replacement and had to send it back. The seller was not a chess set expert and was very gracious about it, and gave me my money back without any argument. I see it's been auctioned again with a more extensive damage report which includes the replacement Knight. I see it went for £598 this time, so that's more or less in keeping with the guideline that a missing piece (not a pawn) halves the value.

Sheesh! That #2044 looks amazing....I'd never have thought I'd want an old/vintage set,but these are really fine objects of desire and in such nice shape. The guy must go to a lot of garage sales to come up with such a fantastic inventory.

Good luck to the fortunate few who get one of these gems.

Tim Millard was the highest bidder on two of my Jaques sets that I sold on eBay.

Nobody finds that set looking awfully new? Aside from the shine (ok you can clean up any set and make it shiny) there is no noticeable damage or and dust residue in the rooks that is always hard to completely get out. And the label. Box looks aged yes, label really doesn't. Then put an antique book in the picture to enhance an antique vibe. Hmm. Hope I am wrong. Please let an expert look at the set when it arrives.

I don't think there's anything suspicious about that set. I've had Jaques sets where the pieces look shiny and the labels look new. I believe it's just that they've not been played with. That set looks like a great buy to me.

Of course it's possible that my sets were modern fakes!

One thing I’d like to have from an established chess seller like T Millard or F Camaratta is a repair report telling me what was done to restore the set.

Any reputable seller would mention this.
