This is a bit off-topic, but a set sold last night on eBay for £820:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/375321073324?mkevt=1&plmtId=1110100101&mesgId=4001&mkpid=0&emsid=enull.m161499.l174139&mkcid=7&ch=osgood&euid&bu=44412977735&trkId=8b3cf623-01b1-4709-a030-f0c0faee6d2c&cnvId=a7fb74a1-c76a-4a5d-81a4-a4efd73d9c0c&osub=-1%7E1&crd=20240326103104&segname&recoId=375321073324&recoPos=1

Anyone got any idea why this went for so much? It's not a Jaques, I don't think it's a BCC or an Ayres. it's not even a marked set. It's nice enough but something special.

What am I missing?

Seems odd … black knight missing bottom half of jaw … 5 other flawed pieces. 🤔

Exactly! It's like if you break a few bits off you get a better price

Some collectors requested a non weighted version of our 1850 -

Nothing much except that you don't get sets like that so much. They have an appeal to people who are a bit older and who remember sets like that from the 50s and 60s. Sets which were quite old then, maybe in a chess club's spare equipment cabinet. It seems to be in perfect condition. I would have thought £300 tops but when you have two people both wanting it and both determined to get it .... I think I have a set like it. Maybe should sell it.

I looks to be from about 1900 to me. It wasn't in perfect condition.

Value is such a strange beast …5 flawed pieces and a knight with a busted jaw … even in ebony - not my cuppa but someone enjoyed the sip.., good luck to them! I’m sure they will enjoy their purchase. Some people wouldn’t go near some of the sets I buy - one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Never has a saying been so true than in this forum. 👍

Yes, the Gaboon ebony does look jet black indeed.

I have had some pieces of ebony break off but it was lighter and greyish black in colour.

For now, I dont see any seller selling brand new chess sets in Gaboon Ebony.

Is it possible to create your own with one of these 3d printers?

My vintage JoL chess set...

Very nice set, thank you for posting!

The Gaboon Ebony is available but quite expensive. For example one piece at 1.25"x 3.75" x 36" would cost me $229 US.

Impractical

DesperateKingWalk, it's not that I don't like your "vintage JoL" set, but it's certainly not the traditional Jaques pattern 😮

I like it too, it's actually a French set from the Jura region and, in this specific case, apparently marketed by JoL. Have been produced for many different resellers and exported all over the world. Lardy, Chavet and probably many other Jura manufacturers had this set in their portfolio.
