Do all the earliest sets have stained boxwood knights?

It was an offer there very very interesting (like the 50% that you proposed in your shop)
Unfortunately for me (sic) I'm on a very expensive purchase, because I have decided to offer me the chess set of my dreams ...

In any case, this offer for Jacques set was, in my opinion, really very attractive.
Maybe Another Time ...

My thoughts on ebonized vs. ebony....Ebonized since it is boxwood would have less "chance" to crack. But remember a lot has to do with the placement of the weights and what the weights are made of.  Also the humidity range the set is kept at.

The question does the untstained wood show through?  I am guessing the question should be after staining boxwood black does it show through?  If done properly I would say no as the sets I have do not show through.  If you chip a piece yes the boxwood would need to be touched up with a little black shoe polish or stain.

I have a number of ebonized sets, when touch ups are required, here's what I use. It works great!

I prefer a paint pen over a sharpie. It seems to blend better. Black shoe polish also works for chipped collars with exposed light colored wood.

I recently broke an ear off an ebonized knight. On that small piece, not quite 1/8" at its widest point, the wood was black all the way through.

Hi, there are many more knowledgeable people than me in this forum who can give a more solid opinion, but for what I see in the pics and the little I know about old chess set it may well be, I think that ebony is more difficult to carve than boxwood so maybe it was easier when the design is complex to carve the piece in boxwood and ebonise it.

And yes, the set is gorgeous, and Carl is right to be proud of his repro, which is very close to this amazing set.

I own the ebonized version, which is a fantastic set. With the postage and the mahogany box, this is an incredible deal. And kingside markings? The only thing better would be the box saying "You do not look well, Robert James," when it opened.

Hi Chuck...I think the ebonised set you own is the Fischer 72 ?

this one on offer is made by the same guys who make this same exact model for JJaques......

LOL, perhaps I own too many sets when Carl knows better than I do just what I have!? Nahhh.
