Revanche vintage set & board ...

Hi All happy.png . Just picked up a lovely  (93mm King) Revanche (I believe) set that is quite similar to the IBM tournament sets of yester year. I know the kings and bishops are slightly different to the ones in the Smylov and Botvinnik  IBM tourney pics but I believe the size is the same. The sizes in the IBM tournament sets of this style varied over the years. This is NOT the largest variation. Which I doubt I will ever find sad.png . But very close. Here is a GREAT link to each years pictures of the IBM tournament and they can be enlarged by clicking on the individual pics. And the pics of my set. Happy New Year !! https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:IBM_international_chess_tournament?fbclid=IwAR3rOrEMwaECtxBTDXfxtbaMdMv-PF5lnJQVqhXw_C9QxLvYQfQmIIAaHhU

WOAH. Beautiful! Where did you find that Revanche set? I've been actively looking for one but there haven't been any for sale on eBay or Etsy at any price. Do you have some secret honey hole?

For me, the rooks are the star of this set. They got it right.

Based on the photographic evidence, it looks like your set is from 61; then you see mixtures of pieces; Until 64 that new pieces are seen, congratulations on your new acquisition.

Thanks for asking. A friend (Thanks wink.png )  in Ireland found it for me on UK ebay.  I agree these rooks with the slightly flared turrets are great and make it easier to hang onto unlike the smoother Chavet B-210 rooks.

I agree thanks. Yes that photo history on the link is awesome. There is some minor differences to my set like the King finials on my pieces seem to have an extra "step" at the bottom. And the bishops on the IBM pieces appear more conical in their miters. But over all quite similar.

Thanks happy.png . I am still amazed at how rare the full size "IBM" version is considering the tournaments went on for decades. The search continues ...

I just started playing and got my first chess set.

Seems to be the smaller version (85mm king) of yours? Or at least very similar to my untrained eye.

Very beautiful set, congratulations!
