I recently acquired a set of old club-style chess pieces from the First Czechoslovak Republic era, roughly 100 years old.
I’m currently debating whether to replace the felts or leave them as they are. Functionally and visually, new felts would make sense. But the old ones are part of the story. For now, I’ll keep them as-is, handle them with care, and let time decide.”

Gorgeous set. Terrific story. Have you left the felts alone? Last year, I purchased an old ‘gulag set’. Not unique or as beautiful as your set, but it does have its ‘story’ and ‘road wear’. I had the same issue regarding the felts - originally made from fabric that had survived for the better part of a hard century (some were missing). It was a very difficult decision, but I did replace them, reluctantly. I still feel ambivalent about it…

Beautiful set! I think Ron Fromkin's gray-green baize (shown here - right-hand photo) would be perfect for the history and feel of those pieces.

GPD, always excellent suggestions - and ‘just when I think I’m out, you pull me back in!’ 😂

You’ve directed me to Ron Fromkin in the past - he has since repaired some damaged pieces for me. What a terrific resource!

Indeed he is! When I saw those wonderful pieces of yours I immediately thought the rougher-looking baize in the photo would be a perfect match.

Probably Ayres club set with no drilled out eyes makes it rare around 1880s 1890s , How the years seem to go by , My first set i had restored , was in a bad way , Took a lot of TLC .

Sitting on my 50's style jaques chess board from a defunct chess club 60sq . very rare and hard to find size . That too took a lot of TLC + a Mom Vintage Chess Clock Hungarian 1950s on my 60.s glass coffee table ,
