Hi all,

I'm looking for a set of pieces for a 23.6 inch board with 2.36 inch squares would a king height 4inch base 1.6 inch and pawn base 1.1 Inch suit this board. These are pieces I really want.

Thanks in advanced.

Chess Set Sizing - Pieces vs Board...

The primary sizing criteria for the set and board is that of square size vs King base diameter...

A good rule of thumb is...

King base diameter = 0.75 * square size
or equivalently....
Square size = 1.33 * King base diameter

Any variation from these ratios, or the size of individual pieces and pawns is a matter of personal preference...

Thank you. I want a lot of space on my board used for games so I think I'll go for them anyways there roughly 68percent the square size. I have a smaller board for in my room for study with 3inch pieces coming soon

There is also the pawn sizing "rule". Some like four pawns to fit inside a square, so their diameter should be half the square size:

Square size = 2 * Pawn base diameter

Others prefer pawns a bit bigger, with two pawns fitting diagonally into a square. So:

Square size = 1.7 * Pawn base diameter

Strictly speaking for this it should be 1 + (sqrt(2)/2) which is 1.7071.... but I think 1.7 is close enough!

For finding a set with the sizes you're looking for, the only place I've seen all the measurements shown is House of Chess (in the "Specifications" tab of the pieces):

If you use the Jaques style Staunton designs, you will find those pieces have broader bases than others.  This will affect sizing.

In my experience these types of sets do not do as well with the four pawns fitting in a square rule.  Often times we have found two pawns at the diagonal to be better.

But I would never size a set to a square size using only the pawns.

The King usually has the widest base.  And most have found out to use this measurement for sizing.  This is why you usually the King base diameter mentioned in a description of a nice wood set.

But even that is only a starting point for me. Granted I will consider it first.  But the other pieces and their complete size matter quite a bit.

Once I have seen a set on a board, I know what square size I like the best for it.

And I have seen The King base to square size range from 68% all the way to 80% depending on how the whole set looks on the board.  And yes, I have some sets that four pawns fit in a square and some that do not.

I agree, and sorry - I didn't mean to suggest that a set should be selected using just the pawns, only that the pawn size is another criteria to consider. I've rejected sets because the King was the right size but I thought the pawns were too small.
