I'm enjoying a Gulden Draak while working through a Kasparov v Karpov game tonight!

Is it weird that I like how crowded my board looks?

I think it's a matter of taste. In the USSR, the boards were usually quite small relative to the pieces, some of which are bloody huge. Most of my older Russian friends like a crowded board, whereas I like the squares to be more generously sized.

my good pal @spartakbarnsley has a big interest in Soviet sets, hopefully he will jump in this thread.

I'm here! Although I will say that @cgrau is definitely more of an expert than I am in the subject, but anyway I'll be happy to share some shots of my collection.

Check out Oldset on Etsy.

Fabulous repros, almost in Noj territory quality wise.I recently got his Alekhine set and it is just stunning. All Maple pieces of stellar detail.

No worries about the poor quality coming out of India.

Grossmeister set, probably from the late 60's / early 70's. The board is unusually very big for a Soviet one - 6cm squares. Usually 5cm was as big as it got, which in my opinion makes for a very crowded game.

Set which has been christened "Grandmaster 1". Probably from the 50's or early 60's. Even on a modern 5.6cm board there's not a huge amount of space between the pieces.

One of the most iconic Soviet sets ever made, the Botvinnik-Flohr 2.

The Mordovian (Latvian) set of Queen's Gambit fame. This is a 1969 set, on a board from the same era. The squares are only 4.5cm, a bit small for my liking. 5cm is ideal for this set.

Some more here from my collection. I have quite a few duplicates, so if anyone is interested I have some items which I'm willing to sell. My wife says she needs the storage space!
