I don't know why some of the better companies don't offer the Soviet Era Grandmaster style sets (only made better). These are the ones with the opposite color spires on the King Queen and Bishop pieces. I KNOW they would be a big hit. Just my .02 Smile. Here's a cool video showing them starting at 13:17 .Cheers -Ronbo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXTwxG4N62Y

Several vendors offer sets in the Soviet and other Eastern traditions.

Chess Bazaar offers a set which is inspired by the sets which were common in the Soviet Union.  It's here:

The bases could be wider and the King's finnial is strangely shaped, but the broad strokes are there.  I believe this design is a work-in-progress from CB and there may be future revisions.
In addition to this there is quite an active market for vintage chess sets on ebay and etsy.  You'll find a great variety there.  However, the majority of those sets will not be weighted.

Thanks Jack - Yes I bought newly made one from company in Russia and was unweighted. A bit disappointing. Also picked up a set from Belarus the other day which was vintage. It hasn't arrived yet but I am hoping the quality is a little better. The knights in this set are my favorite ... <img src="

I encourage anyone thinking of building a collection of Soviet sets to check out the posts of cgrau, goodknightmike, and rcmacmillan. I own three Soviet sets which I adore. But the sets those three have shared with this forum are awesome. The posts and pics are informative and detailed and should be considered a collector's guide.

Where did you purchase your set? I love unweighted sets and am very frustrated by how hard they are to find.
