This review is about Staunton Castle "Paul Morphy Staunton 3.5" Chessmen in Golden Rosewood & Boxwood". This set comes with extra queens and a storage box.

Measured specs:

King 3.45" (87.72mm) / 1.57" (39.89mm) - 56g/59g
Queen 2.71" (68.95mm) / 1.4" (35.63mm) - 38g/42g
Bishop 2.45" (62.35mm) / 1.31" (33.44mm) - 39g/42g
Knight 2.25" (57.23mm) / 1.30" (36.27mm) - 38g/38g
Rook 1.86" (47.23mm) / 1.32" (33.54mm) - 34g/36g
Pawn 1.70" (43.38mm) / 1.14" (29.01mm) - 17g/18g

Note: weight is boxwood first then golden rosewood.

Set weight: 1045g

It came well wrapped as usual from SC, this set came with nice wooden SC storage box. Included the usual certificate with purchase date on it.

Impression:

This set is the "budget" line, it cost USD 166.22 with storage box included. This would make the pieces itself cost approximately 110 USD. It is typical Staunton design with broad bases and nicely weighted therefor it handles well during play. The weights are pretty consistent across the set. It is beautifully carved and finish is flawless. It feels premium even though it's supposed to be "budget" line. I'd say this set gives you really big bang for your buck. Highly recommended!

Beautiful. Congratulations. SC consistently delivers top quality in their workmanship.

I saw the price went up with 20 USD since I bought it 2 months ago, but if you need a nice wooden storage box it's still a steal for what you get, a quality set.

It is different in many ways designwise indeed. I see it more as contemporary variation of Morphy's. I wanted the storage box for my Grimshaw set wink.png

It baffles me how many Jaques variations are out there and I notice mostly are centered around the knights. I love the classic looks of it but to be frankly, I'm not really charmed by the knights lol.

But then again, if you replace only the knight with a Chavet knight then there goes the classic look so a Jaques knight is a necessary piece of the classic look wink.png

I was referring to the real Jaques knights in general. The knight is the only piece of the set I'm not charmed of. I did get a Jaques repro set in the beginning of this year and I had a hard time choosing the knight I like the most. I ended up with SC Grimshaw set, this knight:

I love the original Jaques knights, but I can understand if you do not prefer them. There was a time when I thought some of the Cooke knights looked a bit strange, so I get how that can be. They kind of grew on me over time and now I just love them. Btw, I like your SC Grimshaw knight too. I thought about getting that before and after I purchased the Morphy from SC. I ended up not getting it because I can't just buy everything I like. I would become a chess hoarder.

That’s the set I use to study with (only ebonized), and have even used it to play a couple of times with friends, though usually we play outside or at a local games shop so different sets are used there.

I can't tell which one that is. Is the 3.5" Paul Morphy set or the Grimshaw set?

That's the set I have in golden rosewood, the review above. See it's confusing so many variations lol. But a Jaques set as whole, like I said before, is really classy looking set. I love that.

mr Battleduck it's good looking in black too it's just I like "colorful' more for black pieces that's why I went for golden rosewood happy.png

Its the 3.5" Paul Morphy by Staunton Castle.

I like/use it so much I got two in case pieces crack or get lost. One I got from amazon

https://www.amazon.com/Paul-Morphy-Premium-Staunton-Chess/dp/B071NHZKT5/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Paul+Morphy+Series+Premium+Staunton+3.5%22+Chess+Pieces&qid=1620108992&sr=8-1

and one from ebay. Identical, same manufacturer.

What's interesting is that same set is listed at their website as 3.25 and I'm not sure if it really is 3.25 so a slightly smaller set or exact same and they just have it listed wrong.

Yo,"Battleduck".....that is such a nice/cozy set up you've got there......Makes me want to curl up with a nice cup of cocoa(I use the cocoa term, since it must be pretty chilly in your parts).

Mr Battleduck I think it's listed wrong. I've measured the king is 3.45" so 3.5 is correct give or take.

Mr MCH yeah I can totally see what you meant by restraining yourself. I have the same.

I can sum up some points for you why you should get the set:

1. We all live short while on this earth

2. I do believe the prices are going up as everything is becoming more expensive in live, this includes woods too for example

3. It's a steal, this quality set for only this much

4. Worst case scenario, you can sell it later down the road with minimal loss or even make money out of it.

Well?
