The Eight . . . . Best Mystery chess related book I've ever read . . . .

This Eight is the best chess book i've ever read. It spans the 7th & the 18th century.

Written by Katherine Neville. I have it in the pocket version. Usually I prefer book bound copies.

It is a mystery, has humor, love, chess play and you will be amazed at all the chess figures that are brought up. The protagonist is just a pawn in this tale.

I picked it up and started to read it just because of the cover. I was a great read.

It might be available free at libraries.

If you have read other books with chess as the theme, please let me know the name and the authors.

Thanks, bye for now.

Try this book: The Miniature Man by R. Muir.  I really enjoyed it, though it can be pretty intense in spots.  For a very nice collection of chess-themed short stories, I liked Sinister Gambits, edited by Richard Peyton.  The later book contains the following stories:

I: Grandplayer's Nightmares
The Dreams of Albert Moreland by Fritz Leiber
The Three Sailor's Gambit by Lord Dunsany
The Devil That Troubled the Chessboard by Gerald Kersh
Pawn To King's Four by Stephen Leacock
The Royal Game by Stefan Zweig
      End-Game by J.G. Ballard

II: Bizarre Chessmen
The Queen of the Red Chessmen by Lucretia P Hale
A Game of Chess by Robert Barr
A Set of Chessmen by Richard Marsh
The Haunted Chessmen by E.R. Punshon
      Bishop's Gambit by August Derleth
The Immortal Game by Poul Anderson

III: Blood Chess
A Chess Problem by Agatha Christie
      Checkmate by Alfred Noyes
Professer Pownall's Oversight by H. Russell Wakefield
The Cat From Siam by Fredric Brown
      Fool's Mate by Stanley Ellin
A Better Chess-Player by Kenneth Gavrell

Another title I read in this genre is The Chess Team by James Sawaski.

Hi licenser

Thanks so much for all the suggestions.

That give me plenty of books to get at the local library.

I started reading the "the chess team" but the font type was so small I had to give up. My son read that book and he found it interesting and he recommends that I try to get it in large type. Maybe it is on large type or on a e-book download.

                          Thank again.

Is there a related to chess place or store where you can get some of those books via internet buying?

Thanks

NOTE to Denver. I case you are from Denver, that is the city where I would retired if I could do so. The best place to live that I  have known.

Denver - when I go to the library on Friday I'll take a look at it. Honestly, I've never heard o fit before but I will take your recommendation on it and go take a look for it. Thanks for the tip.  Smile

Hola tabor

Como estas? Yo soy mas joven que tu?

Just go to "google" and type in the name of the book and it will take you where the book is available.

I have been to Denver Colorado once on a stop over flight. I love John Denver songs. But they have snow and I don't like cold and mud.

Hi Chess Marks the Spot

If you do get the book, you will find it a easy read. If you like humour you will find it there also. You will find Giant Chess figures that we read about in books. You know I am going to get the book and read it again.

Hope you find it.

Thanks for reading and comments.

It is so nice to receive those small notes.

Thanks for all the recommendations!

Happy to have the list. Mystery falls into the genre of fiction where the stories are usually involving mysterious death or other paranormal activities. I'm listed some of the best mystery books that you don't want to miss. You can get them from here.

Thanks for posting other fiction books, but I wish they had humor in them . . . .

"The EIGHT" is still the best . . . IMHO . . .

I also use thriftbooks.com. Great prices on used books, and free shipping with a $10 order. They also have new books, sometimes with a lower price than Amazon. For chess books, I always check both sites, along with bookdepository.com, to see which has the lowest price.

An interesting chess novel, though not a mystery, is "The Chess Players", by Frances Parkinson Keyes. The central character is Paul Morphy. It is a historical novel, with very little actual chess in it, but it is fascinating to read a fictional account of Morphy's life. The author does a fine job of blending what we know about his life with fictional events that would explain things that we don't know, or rather that we don't understand.

I will look for "The Chess Player"

Thanks for the suggestion . . .
