Try this book: The Miniature Man by R. Muir. I really enjoyed it, though it can be pretty intense in spots. For a very nice collection of chess-themed short stories, I liked Sinister Gambits, edited by Richard Peyton. The later book contains the following stories:
I: Grandplayer's Nightmares
The Dreams of Albert Moreland by Fritz Leiber
The Three Sailor's Gambit by Lord Dunsany
The Devil That Troubled the Chessboard by Gerald Kersh
Pawn To King's Four by Stephen Leacock
The Royal Game by Stefan Zweig
End-Game by J.G. Ballard
II: Bizarre Chessmen
The Queen of the Red Chessmen by Lucretia P Hale
A Game of Chess by Robert Barr
A Set of Chessmen by Richard Marsh
The Haunted Chessmen by E.R. Punshon
Bishop's Gambit by August Derleth
The Immortal Game by Poul Anderson
III: Blood Chess
A Chess Problem by Agatha Christie
Checkmate by Alfred Noyes
Professer Pownall's Oversight by H. Russell Wakefield
The Cat From Siam by Fredric Brown
Fool's Mate by Stanley Ellin
A Better Chess-Player by Kenneth Gavrell
Another title I read in this genre is The Chess Team by James Sawaski.
This Eight is the best chess book i've ever read. It spans the 7th & the 18th century.
Written by Katherine Neville. I have it in the pocket version. Usually I prefer book bound copies.
It is a mystery, has humor, love, chess play and you will be amazed at all the chess figures that are brought up. The protagonist is just a pawn in this tale.
I picked it up and started to read it just because of the cover. I was a great read.
It might be available free at libraries.
If you have read other books with chess as the theme, please let me know the name and the authors.
Thanks, bye for now.
