I grew up playing on the Conqueror chess set that my dad had inherited. It's still one of the best looking chess sets I've ever seen. While it's a fancy set, friends could still join in a game and not be confused about which piece was which. I have a lot of love for this set - click here for a picture.

I thought this one from www.prestigechesssets.com was pretty cool;

I grew up playing on the same set. My tastes are more traditional now but I still have a soft spot for that set. I don't know what became of it. I think I left it at home when I moved away for college and my younger brothers had their way with it.
Maradonna, I don't seem to be able to rename a link so here's the long version of one on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vtg-Conquerer-Sculptured-Chess-set-by-Ganine-Pacific-game-co-Made-in-USA-/261441286209?pt=Games_US&hash=item3cdf1d7041
I had a friend who once started to put together his own chess set, by slowly purchasing different pewter pieces throughout the years. Wizards, dragons and such. He never did finish the set, but I thought it was a cool idea. You could really design it the way you like it, and each piece would have a unique past and memory for where and when it was purchased.
