Today's Analysis Set

Chuck, The rollup wooden board Kills me!

Your gear, always the very best!

The only modest input from me, and remember my stats are beer adjusted.

I use a small wooden board that fits on a kitchen type " Lazy Susan".

Unless you have already tried it, when you "spin" the board to actually get a feel  of the opponent POV it helps me with " what next"

Nice soviet set!

Thanks. And that's quite a German set there. I'm keeping my eyes out for one.

German set and Drueke board. I like these knights.

Fascinating set, Info. I  especially love the knights and the bishops' miters.

Many thanks, Einmal. The board is a hoot. It's quite small, but good for analysis. I spiffed it up with some liquid gold and it now looks more well-aged than beat up. The lazy susan is a fascinating idea. I have two that I use for painting boards, but that's a great idea. As long as after a few beers I'm not spraying the analysis set and board black.

One of my very favorite Soviet sets, Up! And those Chernev books are so much fun. Great games.

A French set (Lardy?), the height of the king is 7.5 centimeters (about 3"). Final position of the 7th game of Chernev's Logical Chess.

A Lardy on a Drueke board... perfect!

Those small Drueke boards are beautiful, and you can get good deals on ebay.

This morning I used this little Uhlig to review another game.

Love it, Info. That board must roll up nicely.

The final position in Lombardy-Pavey, 1955, 1-0.

Chuck, who's your study partner?

cgrau

Lou, that would be Bruiser Grau. As a puppy, he pushed back a chair, used it to climb on the dining room table, where knocked all the Zagreb pieces on the floor, and then proceeded to chew them up. Now he's content to gaze at me while I push the wood.

loubalch

I guess to a hungry canine everything looks like food, especially chess pieces, which (just might) be dog biscuits in disquise. Too bad they have to chew through the whole set, just in case.

UpcountryRain

When a dog chews on a chess piece he is actually imbuing it with power.

If you doubt what I say, let your dog chew on a rook for a while. The next time you play with that set, neither you nor your opponent will be able to keep your eyes off of the magic rook.

It might seem off topic.

As some of you know I have been looking to buy a new piece box and board combination.

Since there are already dozens and dozens of sets in my storage building, it seemed wasteful to buy another set .

Anyway, at work one of my friends showed me pictures of a mountain bike he is considering buying.

He is thinking of buying a bicycle that cost $6700.00 dollars and the damn thing doesn't even have a little bell on the handle bars!

Now I feel like an idiot for not pulling the trigger on the less than $200 chess set.

No need to feel like an idiot. It's just a lesson learned.

My wife taught me the fundamental verities about such purchases. The most important truth is inscribed on a little easel perched on her dresser:

Of course this truth applies to chess sets as well as to shoes.

A second verity she has taught me is that when you find deals, however small, buy as much as you can. The more you buy, they more you save. It's not the definition of economies of scale I learned studying economics, but the logic is irrefutable.

So the next time you're confronted with the quandary, to buy that set, or not to buy, remember my wife's lessons.

Objection as to relevance overruled.

Today I swapped out the brown Lardy with a lacquered black one. The kings actually are 3.4", not 3.0" as I originally reported.

This has such a classic and classy look to it.

Nice set up cgrau!

Is there any way to tell the probable year of making of a particular Lardy set based on the design of the pieces?

Thanks, Info. If there is a way, I don't know it.

@cgrau

Great advice! and as far as finding a deal and buying more to save more . that is the principle I live by when purchasing IPAs and lagers!
