I have always had to purchase either the Kings or Queens separately which usually can be found on the internet. I had a marble queen fall and break once so I have always made sure to keep a spare. I haven't purchased any chess sets in a while however. The Queens and Kings are expensive in comparison to other pieces, it very well might be to keep costs down. I'd contact the seller.
Ultimate Chess Pieces in Wood

If it doesn't turn a rook upside down when a pawn promotes.
seriously
Yeah, I think a rook would work better than a bishop, unless gravity has gotten special suddenly.

As someone who uses his sets only for display and analysis, I wish there was an option (with any manufacturer) to forgo extra queens for a 5% drop in price.
I remember when Frank Camaratta started giving the extra Queens. This was in the very late 1990’s.
I really did not take long for the vast majority of sellers to provide the same. And when Frank started this, the price of the sets did not go up. Heck they were expensive enough as it was.

In my house, usually when a pawn promotion to a second Queen is inevitable the other side resigns. GG. Shake hands. Get a snack before rematch. The second Queen doesn't even get on the board.

And if you experience this line?

With that though, there are some few suppliers that do not provide the extra queens.
Yes, that is why I started this thread. It's been a while where I did not see a set come through with extra queens.

@TundraMike To me it seems weird that the Ultimate wood set does come with extra queens. I think some magnetic sets are like this where there are no extra queens but generally all sets include it or at least offer it for more money like in Noj's case.

Yes, that is why I started the thread. NOJ charges extra where almost no one else does. I was just wondering if the extra queens are available. I would pay extra for the queens.
I know Shelby is very honest, maybe he did it to hold the price of the sets down. With that, he could sell them as an add on. I also realize some people do not want the extra queens. It's not like you get 2 extra queens for free, it all has a cost. Just like some people really think they get "free" shipping. It's all added to the product if not listed separately.
I called and spoke with Shelby this morning about this. He said that the extra Queens are not available because they are too expensive.
I asked if they would have some made for sale. He said they most likely would.

Add-on purchase. The best solution to satisfy everyone.
I agree, at least make them an option. I was just hoping Shelby would stop by and post. I started this thread to thwart off this exact topic after the people start to order but did not read the whole description taking for granted that they are 34 pieces. That could happen since the majority of sets come that way these days. Most take it for granted.

I was hoping Shelby would stop by as well as I'm curious. We both have come to a set of just stunning metal pieces. Those are next in my purchase list!

I would definitely assume the set came with extra queens so this thread is really good for those who want to purchase the wood set. I agree the add-on would be the best option to satisfy all.

Under FIDE rules, if you promote a pawn and replace it with an upside down rook, it is still a rook and not a queen!
https://www.sudburyriverchess.com/USChess%20and%20FIDE%20rules%20differences.pdf
"It is not allowed to use an inverted rook to mean “queen” when promoting a pawn. If a promotion piece is not readily available, the player must stop the clocks and ask the arbiter
for assistance. An upside-down rook is treated as promotion to a rook. If the arbiter sees this, he will turn the rook right side up and the game continues with the pawn promoted to a rook."

From what Shelby did and didn’t say to me, I don’t believe the extra Queens have been made or decided upon doing until now. So this shipment does not have extra Queens and there are none available yet.
Made this topic specific to the Wooden Ultimate sets that are arriving soon.
My question is, and might be a question others have once they read the description, is can you purchase 2 extra queens for the sets? I noticed they came with 32 pieces, no extra queens.
I do know that keeps the cost of the set down but sometimes they are offered as an "extra" when not included in the original.
I am buying a set either way but maybe the manufacturer can give you a price for two extra queens and ship them to you when you place another order from that place.
