And for all of you that busted me up on the Butter color...they are now selling one for one against the Off-white.  I think that since people know the Butter is never going to be made again, it is more palatable for people because of "FOMO".

What's that old 80-90's song..."You don't know what you've got till it's gone!"  LOL

You have to admit...the color grows on you!

thanks

To be fair, you have them listed at a pretty darn good price right now too.

Sybot,

For what you are getting, they are listed at a pretty fair price.  We do have to support 15 people in our crew!  I know "profit" is considered a bad word right now but without it...it's pretty hard to keep the lights on and pay the crew!

And if you knew what it took to bring a set to market, you might change your tune...LOL!

I want to break out that quote from "Tommy Boy" when he makes his first sale...but if I did it would get whacked my the moderators here at Chess.com (with good reason!)

Thanks,

No disrespect is intended sir.  I love the Butters, and the price they are listed at right now is phenomenal, I like the other ones as well.  I bought two sets of butters and one set of the new ones for my club about a month ago, and all three are quickly becoming favorites.  I just ordered two more butters and another new one just now.

The price on the Bobby Fischer ones is fine as well, and I have no complaints and happily paid it.  But the for $30 bucks the butter ones are a fantastic deal right now.

@MCH818 let me know if you ever come to NYC. We can play some OTB at Marshall's or something.  I'll bring a nice wood set and my butter yellow Ultimate Chess set.

[edit] @ShelbyLohrman I bought this set because of the wide bases and the new weighing system. Thanks for your hard work to deliver a good product.

Wait, didn't you buy it for the extra-extra-extra queens?  What kind of rip-off is this? tongue.png tongue.png tongue.png

You know I have had customers asking for triple queens.  LOL.

Tell 'em to play a more effective defense. wink.png

28 extra pawns (for Horde) should be included with every set. Any less would be criminal.

I own three versions of the Ultimate set - the original, the butterball, and a wooden version in Sheesham, but I'll be holding out for a cream/almond and light brown/tan set before I buy a fourth. Why not offer a color scheme that approximates a boxwood and golden rosewood wooden set?

Just received my "butter" (version 2) pieces and since I didn't see anyone had posted dimensions of all the pieces, I thought I'd give rough (likely within 0.05 inches) measurements of each piece, which should be the same for the new version 3.  (I don't have Shelby's micrometer!)

Version 2 ("butter yellow" light pieces) Ultimate

king: 1.68 inch base (75% of 2.25 inch square), 3.75 inch height
queen: 1.53 inch base, 3.25 inch height
rook: 1.38 inch base, 2.23 inch height
bishop: 1.48 inch base, 2.82 inch height
knight: 1.42 inch base, 2.50 inch height
pawn: 1.23 inch base (55% of 2.25 inch square, 73% of king), 1.94 inch height

Someone previously posted the weight of each piece as follows:

King = 87-88g
Queen = 77-78g
Rook = 62-63g
Bishop = 65-66g
Knight = 65-66g
Pawn = 31-32g

No micrometer!  Heathen!  Hahaha, you know that thousandth of an inch makes such a huge difference! tongue.png

80 years from now Butterball will be a classic!

Ooops - didn't realize Shelby posted this on page 51!  Only one of my queen measurements was off more than 0 05 inches.  Shelby's measurements below:

King: 3.736" Tall with a 1.669" Base (74.2% of 2.25" square)
Queen: 3.176" Tall with a 1.565" Base
Rook: 2.245" Tall with a 1.395" Base
Bishop: 2.79" Tall with a 1.49" Base
Knight: 2.49" Tall with a 1.431" base
Pawn: 1.92" Tall with a 1.248" Base (55.5% of 2.25 inch square, 74.8% of king)

And now the Butterball Ultimate becomes a cult classic.

It certainly meets the criteria of "panned at introduction and over time grew on people like a fungus", hahaha!

One thing I forgot - the "will the bishop fit between the king and queen in the center of diagonal squares" test and the "will two pawns fit diagonally in a square" test for a 2.25 inch squares board:

Bishop base + 0.5 x (King base + Queen base) = 1.49 + 0.5(1.669+1.565) = 3.107 inches

Size of squares x (Square root of 2) = 2.25 inches x 1.414 = 3.182 inches

So there is 3.182 - 3.107 = 0.075 inches total space between the bishop and the royal pair.

Four pawns won't fit into one square since the 1.248 inch base is greater than 1.125 inches (half a 2.25 inch square), but two diagonal pawns with 1.248 inch base will fit:

 2.25 x (square root of 2) - 1.248 x [1 + (square root of 2)] = 0.169 inch space between diagonal pawns in opposite corners of one 2.25 inch square

I think the Butterball works best on a board with complementary rather than contrasting colors, as seen below. On a cream and brown vinyl board, it's more than acceptable.

Once the stark white starts burning out your retinas you may agree that things go better with Butter!

Eyechess

And the Butterball is a great set to use early in the morning while you are eating your toast,...with,...Butter.

Is that a real wood board or a thin flex? Either way, it looks fantastic. Where did you get it, love that color combination.

Wood Grain Mousepad Tournament Chessboard, 2.25 inch squares, Camphor & Oak, received from ACE with the Ultimate version 2 pieces.

Ah, I'm glad to see these pictures!  I finally succumbed to the peer pressure and ordered some butter pieces this weekend.  I also ordered a nicer set that came with the woodgrain mousepad board in the same order.  That is gonna look NICE!  Now I'm in a hurry to get them.... lol
