At least in the USA there is a subsection of Chess players that are cheap. They do not want to spend money on this hobby or pastime that they do not have to.
I do not think there is anything necessarily wrong with that and I can happily live alongside them.
It is humorous to me when they come to this forum that is about Chess equipment and say things are expensive. No one is forcing anyone to buy things that cost more than the less expensive things like plastic chess pieces.
