Unknown Set -HELP!?

A very good friend of mine (the same who drew the exceptional portrait of Capablanca I use as a profile picture) happened upon an unknown (at least to him and me) chess set in a Bric-a-Brac-shop in Hamburg last week. Unfortunately it was missing three pieces, but in the end he still decided on buying it. An excellent decision if you ask me! The problem is: We have no idea what set it is and were not able to find anything on it's provenance. We would like to know that in order to maybe be able to replace the missing pieces in the set. But maybe one of the experienced collectors on here can help us? I would be greatly appreciated!

I will attach some photos of the set but first let me say what I was able to find out by looking at it:

- King height 4"

- Plastic or something very similar

- Lightly weighted

-Felted

That is everything we know for sure. The pieces touch and feel very well and you could easily use them for a game. They look very artsy, but to me they still seem to be made with the serious chess player in mind. One could use them as ones everyday pieces. The pieces (especially the king and bishop) remind me of the old sowjet sets. The finial not being a crown would underline that suspicion. Now I give it over to the Grand Seigneurs of this topic! CGrau, RCMacmillan, Ronbo710, FightingBob, Eyechess, ... Any ideas? Anyone who has anything to say on this set please go ahead!:-)

I've seen this set before. I just Googled it and chess-museum came up saying: "Extraordinary set, produced in the 80ies as an upper end gift by the Soviet Plastics Industry Association - marbled plastic, generated by mixing variously coloured plastics in liquid form before injecting the mold. King stands 99 mm, set is felted, and contained in a superb folding box board." He also has a link to Gert Jan Slotboom's site saying there is a similar set there but it's a broken link; maybe that whole site is down?

Thank you, tmkroll! That is very helpful indeed!

Does anyone know for how much these sets are going? Or where one could get some replacement pieces for the missing pieces of the set?

There have been, and probably still are, a number of sets similar to yours for sale on Etsy.

They are mostly claimed to be made of amber (ancient hardened tree sap) or amber-like material, and usually have asking prices in the hundreds of dollars.

There are three of these sets available on Etsy now.

Thank you all! That was very helpful! Man are those expensive! And sure enough it is not amber...;-)
