Beautiful digs. What! No chess table?

LOL Lou ! Think it's in the Library room, things get so lost around here with all the square footage lol ! Laughing

Sub1000

I saw this before and my first thought was that it was the "blacks vs whites" deal. I know for a short time people were calling everything "dark" and "light" to be more "modern" and "sensitive" in chess.

#7/8 WOW! That is a nice set/board.

that is funny D2, in another thread I used the same pic in the attempt to convince Carl to produce is jaques repro in deep red, what do you guys think about it? I would love it

Sure would be something, even if it was bone to meet those ivory import bans that exist.  Our guess probably would sell like crazy ioho.

I know it may sound heretical to most people here, but I would like it even if it was wood, given the dyeing was well done.

UpcountryRain

The traditional colors of Hawaiians are red and yellow. I love those red and natural sets. Gorgeous.

I think the red is a bit bright. I prefer mahogany.

Here's one we don't think we've seen before, but not sure, looks nice.

As long as I know, chess is white against black, are red sets allowed in tournament?

FIDE Rule C.02.2.4 (applies to FIDE tournaments):

Colour of the pieces

The dark pieces should be brown or black, or of other dark shades of these colours. The light pieces may be white or cream, or of other light colours. The natural colour of wood (walnut, maple, etc.) may also be used for this purpose. The pieces should not be shiny and should be pleasing to the eye.

I'd be ok with it but I would prefer the pieces to be wood. Red plastic pieces can be very bright and distracting imo.

Here is my 3.6" CB Dubrovnik before the Red Queen went drinking. She took one for the team to prove that you had to soak the red pieces in solvent to get the color to run.

Another shot or two of the Romanian/Hungarian set, here on the refinished Spanish board. You can see the red border I added to accent the red pieces.

CG-How did you add that red boarder ? Really stands those pieces out. Also curious, what clock is that we see ?

The clock is a Koopman, brother. After sanding off the gloss finish, I masked a 1/8" wide line, first on two parallel sides, and hand-painted the line with red acrylic. Then I unmasked and did the other two parallel sides. The lines stood up from the board. I finished it with many hand coats of satin polyurethane, enough so that, with light sanding in between, the finish ended up smooth and without the bumps from the painted lines.

My Romanian/Hungarian set on my HOS maple and ebony board. I like its red border because it picks up the red in the pieces.

Now that is classy!

I'm sure you have portraits of Reti and Löwenthal on display, put some Liszt on the stereo and open a bottle of Palinka whenever you take out this beauty? :D

Thanks, Luft. Some good suggestions!

LOL! To make the crimson Dubrovnik's safe for children do you think CB should start using food coloring instead of the wood stain? Say, Red Dye #3 since it's FDA approved.
