Very sweet Ron! Thanks for the pics.
Vintage Chavet #6 Ebony stain :D YAY!!
It is a very nice set, indeed. It took a lot of time and effort, eh? I'm glad that you finally got it. Thank you for posting the pictures and for telling us about these Chavet sets. I ended up with a modern number 5, and although not at the same level as these vintage number 6 sets, it is still nice to look at.
I find, Ron, that the quest is as rewarding as the destination. What's your next collecting adventure?
Thanks to All
. Still plan on getting a set every now and then and possibly selling some of my duplicates I have gathered over the years. Would like to find a vintage Chavet board now. Cheers - Ron
Hi, I've been a lurker here for a while but love vintage chess sets and also think that particular Chavet is the best playing set ever produced. My own version is a composite of a few bits of Henri Chavet sets and a few replacement pieces I turned myself. Can't understand why Chavet don't re-introduce this set, particularly given that its replacement isn't exactly a looker and that vintage sets like the one above are currently selling for about £500 on ebay. Good catch Ron.

yes, that was a crazy auction. That was only the third vintage Chavet from that period in that size I've seen on eBay the last few years, so no wonder there were buyers willing to pay that much. Congrats to the forum member who was the lucky winner (you know who you are).

Wonder how long it will be before that Chavet set is worth more than a Jaques? I emailed a link to the auction to Glayds at morize so who knows. I replicated a few pieces for my Chavet using castello boxwood (which I think is what the indian turners use) but given the apparent value of the set I think I will try to get some good quality buxus and do the job properly.
I have said for ages they need to put that original design out again. And before My (
) final bid in that auction it was already over $300. That's right kids. And any more Chavet sets you can fight for amongst yourselves
. Happy Weekend !!
Very nice. I probably prefer them on a 55mm board that one looks about 2 1/4". Lovely set.
Yes I think the squares on the Drueke board are a bit large for it. I will try the DGT for the next pics.
Audio was right the smaller DGT board seems to fit the vintage Chavet better. And the knights even did a little dance

Is it felted by the way? Doesn't look like it does it? Or is it those skinny felt papers?

Yes but the set is at least 20 years old and the felt is very thin.

Hi All- Just got this BEAUTY in Thanks to two TRUE Gentlemen from Europe
. A vintage Chavet No.6 size (King just over 3.5") and a most unusual ebony stain on the black pieces. It has the felts/weights though some loose. The box is an early one with the top lettering being worn. I will get more pics out soon but had to share what is the Crown Jewel of my collection ASAP
