Vintage Soviet Russian Set Pictorial
Another gorgeous set! It sure makes a difference when we put these sets on properly sized boards.
Thanks Chucks, no question, the folding storage case/board doesn't cut it.
That's a sweet set. Usually, I like the plastic Soviet knights for their oddity alone but these ones are actually pretty nice.
I admit : this one is my favorite soviet / russian chess set... who knows why !
Because its a nice looking set!

Thanks Moriarty, Its also interesting that the King, Queen and Bishop finials are also made of plastic. I wonder if this was the first Russian set to have the knight heads and finials made of plastic?
I'm sure everyone's seen this one on sale at etsy. Way beyond my price range but a pretty interesting set nonetheless.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so.
I bought the same set a couple months ago for far south of $100.
I'm sure the vendor figures that if someone is willing to pay one, two, three-thousand dollars on a set (or repro-set), then surely someone is willing to pay three hundred on an original.
That's my set LOL
The set was in demand, not many had it. Called - grandmasters'
It was the second set I bought myself. Paid ~5rb in ... (forgot, around 1989-1991)
Around 2000 my set started to fell apart - the felt and weights glue disintagrated, thus DIY felts. Took it out of the bag now - seems a lacquire will not last long.
The worst of this set - the base is so large that requires a very huge board, thus the set sits without use, only collects a memory dust :)

who knows why !
With interest in vintage Soviet Russian sets on the rise, here's another vintage set for your perusal. Kings measure 4 3/8" in height with a 1 7/8" diameter base. Pawns are 2 1/4" in height. Pieces are nicely weighted. Knight heads and finials made of plastic.
