Chess box storage has become more expensive Etsy is insane price wise especially for anything of size. I got custom dovetail boxes in walnut for 30 bucks usd not so long ago.

3. I have a Blake and Lake black box from Amazon. This one closes very smoothly. It is an awesome box for the price. It is selling for $39 but I think it was cheaper before https://www.amazon.com/Large-Wooden-Box-Hinged-Lid/dp/B07TKVKHK8/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=blake+and+lake&qid=1620363600&sr=8-1. I keep my CB 3.75" 1849 set in there.

Ohman. The 9.75” long, 7” wide, and 4.5” tall interior dimensions of that Blake and Lake box is juuuuuuust barely big enough to store my 4.125" King, Lardy set standing.

@MCH818 Can I trouble you for a confirmation of the exact interior measurements?

Is it exactly 9.75” long, 7” wide, and 4.5” tall? I measured out my Lardy set footprint on paper. With some creative Tetris-like placement, it just barely fits standing.

The low-end boxes from chess-house are nice enough.

I am fortunate to have a wonderful uncle who is building a chess box for me. It is being constructed from Queensland Maple and will be quite large - being able to house my two 4”+ size sets together. If I remember this thread, I’ll post pictures when complete.

Some have suggested in the past (and posted pics here somewhere) to stop at your local cigar shop and get an empty cigar box. They usually sell them once it’s empty. Plus if you like cigars it will have a nice bouquet to it 😀

Several of my sets are in Scotch tubes.

That's an awesome idea! I never thought about that. I couldn't do it with my wood sets because I am so picky but it sounds like a good one for my plastic and silicone sets. I don't drink so I might have to ask my friends if they have any I could use.

My wood sets are in wood boxes, except that they are sometimes in my tournament bag. I have a lot of plastic sets.

I have a lot of Scotch boxes (tubes?) that my wife wants me to throw away.

I have a few different types of boxes.....I've been lucky at Home Goods(a home decorative store, who occassionally have some nice boxes at low prices)but I like my Blake and Blake box, which is really well made.....The Pleasant Time Industries boxes are extremely fine boxes and super classy.....A bit pricey, but they are my favorite........Got 3 nice locking coffers as well.

I only need one more box/coffer,for when I decide to pull the trigger on my next set, which, considering the plethora of problems in quality lately, won't be too soon.

I don't know if it's just me,but I'm not a fan of plastic boxes....A nice chess set deserves a nice wood box.

I agree, nice chess sets deserves a nice wood box. I use what mister Sound showed, the ones from Philos is affordable and it's massive, it protects well.

Just coming back to this reference above. My uncle recently sent me some photos from his workbench. He's an amateur wood-worker and loves learning and making things. He says he's learned a few things along the way with this box and it's not perfect (in his eyes!) but in my eyes it is and I am grateful that he has crafted this box for me. My apologies for the lack of clarity in some of the photos - he's is in a different state in Australia to myself and I probably won't pick it up for a while. When I do, I will try to post better photos. This fine Queensland Maple box will hold two lovely sets.

That looks very nice! Tell him the Internet says, “Well done!”

Are you kidding! That's not the work of an amateur, but a PRO!

Just spectacular!

Some friends gave me a bottle of 18 year Glenlivet. I need to buy a new chess set to put in the box.

Whatever it costs, if you have an expensive or nice wooden set, get it.  The bases of my major pieces are all cracked on my big wooden set.

These go for $53.00 in medium and $58.00 in large here in N.Z which is around $37.00 - $40.00U.S  I think. Pretty cheap I reckon, I've just ordered two for a couple sets that are on their way.

Nice man. Can you send a link to where you bought this from? Thanks!

New Zealand Chess Supplies. I'm not sure what sort of cost you'd be looking at after shipping to the U.S. The medium size is ideal for 3.75" and the large should be ok for anything up to 4.5".
