Weapons Of Chess by Bruce Pandolfini is a fantastic resource, assuming your already familiar with basic chess strategy, tactics, development rules, etc. Otherwise first read a good beginners book like How To Win At Chess:10 Golden Rules To Follow by Daniel King.

And then there is The Golden Dozen by the same author. I bought both these in the seventies and never get tired of them.
