What is your favourite chess set?

I am intrigued by the story behind the Isle of Lewis chess pieces made of walrus tusk. I saw them displayed in the British Museum and almost bought the replica set in the museum store (100 pounds?) Then to my horror the set was featured in the first Harry Potter movie and it became "HOT". There is a family business on one of the Scottish Isles that makes authentic replicas out of crushed stone/resin. Does anyone know of a used set I might purchase?

I have a 3 3/4" King wooden set that I bought from www.thechesstore.com. It wasn't cheap, but it sits in the living room like a piece of furniture (except when we're playing!) and looks gorgeous.  The pieces are made of Burnt Boxwood, and the board is Black and Ash Burl. My thinking was that if you just spring for a really nice set up front, it should last a lifetime with basic care. I sure hope so, I love the set - it is a real pleasure to play on.

Also, all of my friends and I have tournament sets for playing at the park or beach, and just so there's always a board if we want to play. I also wanna say that it is really important, I think, to make sure you get a Staunton set if you plan on playing with different opponents - it truly sucks to play on a new board and have non-standard pieces. When you're trying to analyze a position, it's terrible to have to remind yourself what the pieces are.

I have about 15 sets most of which are old family heirlooms.Icome from a family of avid chess players and i have a old jauques of london chess set that my great grand father purchased many years ago(100+)My great grand father traveled alot and had the fortune to meet 3 world champions(lasker, capablanca and alekhine). From pictures taken with them it appears that my grandfather used the pieces i have refered to in these off hand games.

When i was first given them i used them alot. But one day my grandfather who had given them to me saw my friends on the high scholl chess team using them for blitz.I at the time had no knowlegde that these pieces were old or that it is possiable that 3 world champions may have played with them.needless to say that when my grandfather told me i rushed back to my living room and replaced them with another set i had.

Would you consider selling one of those shistoric sets?

I recently bought a chess et and board. The board is very nice and hand made. The pieces are weighted Drukee pieces, the best in the worlld. My father has a 3000$ set that was made in the 1500's.

I want to play with an Endangered Species set made out of animal ivories and woods that could become extinct shortly. If I were rich, I would have many and throw the pieces into the fireplace after every capture. When I lost, I would hi-karate chop the boards in half and flip over the expensive heirloom table it sat on. I also fantasize about playing chess with real people as the pieces. I would pay them $7.50 an hour with no benefits like they do at the Ren Faires.

Hello,

I just bought my first set, a 'club set' I guess it's called.  I bought it on eBay from michessacademy.com.   I didn't think of coming here to ask if anyone knew where I could get a cheeper set.  Still, with shipping and handling it was 23 bucks.  11 bucks just for shipping.  I guess it was the best thing for my situation.   I wanted something inexpensive of "approved" quality, and figured that would be the club set.   I also needed something to carry with me in my backpack, as the backpack goes wherever I do.  At first I looked at the USCF website, but they don't take paypal, and they only ship by UPS.   Being as I really am homeless, and don't have a credit card, and UPS won't ship to post offices, I was kinda stuck.   So michessacademy.com was the only company I could use.  As compared to USCF sets, this set is pretty crappy.  The felt is really thin, and the mold seems are a mess.  And, the pieces were dirty, as if someone with grubby fingers had been playing with the set previously.  Still they advertised it as a "new" set.   At least now I have a set for practicing and studying books - something I've just started doing.  Up to this point, I'd been playing by gut instinct, and of course playing poorly.

Anyone have advice on the best place to buy chess sets? online or not.

they are quite cheap in Vietnam... Bout a Bord and a chess set for 35 dolers. The hole set is made off marble it to different colours. I hardly dear to use them thow, as they are slightly unbalanced and tend to tip if you hit the table with your nee.

How many chess sets do you have and what is your favourite and why?

I have a nice 'Staunton' design chess set called a 'Najdorf' set which is felted, double weighted and has black pieces made from sheeshamwood, with an 'Executive' board made from sycamore with a walnut border.

There's nothing quite like 'pushing wood' on a nice chess board.  It beats clicking and dragging a  mouse anyday!

i have that too, but i would like to have the chess set from harry potter & the sorcerer's stone

I've got a smoked glass set that's been my grandpa's, so it's kinda difficult to start playing on a different one :)

My general wooden 3 3/4'' stauton one is set up most of the time so I can just play a few moves when I feel the urge. I also have a nice glass set that I got in the Czech Republic, several travel sets and one set which my gran gave to me which is aparently quite old. The pieces are hand crafted and are red and white ivory. It is boardless unfortunately, but they are very decrative.

Oh I also have a paper set I made at school for use in lessons. I spent ages making it.

classic staunton wooden set, any size ,rosewood, walnut, oak.. all good

A 'Chinese Emperor' set. The white pieces are made of Jade, and the black are rosewood. The royalty is from the style of ancient China, the knights are samurai, the pawns are chinese peasants, etc. Also, the squares have drawings and characters, like mah jong tiles but cooler. It was a gift from someone special as well.

When I was single I got a pseudo-Jacques, nicely weighted and felted, ebony and boxwood.  I use it on a maple/walnut Drucke board.  Check out the reverberations when you move!

At tournaments, or anywhere else on the road, I use one of several tournament specials.  One of them was blessed by a Jesuit priest when he thought I wasn't looking.  I also have picked up some miniature sets.
