Get some wood
what kind of chess sets do you own?

Get some wood
twas thinking about getting the wood set but declined it when i saw the magnetic

i have the standard plastic sauton set with the mouse pad board and the zmf ii clock.. i carry it with me to the park or when ever i'm free.. i have a tripple Vtg Staunton Chess set Weighted piecesset pieces but find it too heavy to carry around.. so i left it at home..
correction i have 4 standard plastic set +board.. but i perfer the mouse pad board..
I have the German plastic chess pieces much superior to the standard chess pieces as they are weighted & felted. I have the International chess pieces played in euro tournaments & are wood.

I have a nice glass chess set but I'm wondering if it's worth getting some wood when I have some spare cash.

I have a small wooden set and a plastic tournament-regulation set. Nothing special, maybe when I'm over 30 I'll buy a NICE wooden set.

Wood and/or Plastic sets only for me. No ivory, bone, metal, glass, or resin...
Same w/ boards - wood or vinyl only.

Got addicted to searching the listings on Ebay so I have around 20 sets.
4 plastic magnetic sets; started with a 7", duct taped it open for analysis, got another to be more portable, and then went 12" for better visibility.
2 HOS sets: a Sheffield 4.4" bud rosewood that I won a bidding war on for around $350 (doesn't leave the house) and an older 3.5" tournament set.
2 HOS plastic collector sets 3.75". The first was a good deal at $30 delivered with a carrying bag. A month later even better for $25.
A 4.5" ebony "Official Staunton" set with a leather 2 shelf case for $150. Maybe my best bargain..,
4 "box" folders. I used one extensively once I upgraded the pieces to ebony. The others seemed like a good idea at the time...
2 noname Indian imports. One's a 4" Staunton in ebony that's a beauty, the other an ebonized "modern" set that everyone hates but me.
1 French Drueke that I bought because the curly maple storage box looked cool. Oh, one of the folders is a Chinese bone set, quite ornate, that went for $8 (yes, getting it delivered cost twice that). A little magnetic pocket "disk" set and a plastic analysis set I haven't used since I went magnetic.
It's a sickness folks. Try to stay away from Ebay if you can. Don't get me started on the chessboards...
EDIT: I forgot the baseball set! $18 delivered with a 2.25 green and maple board. You're right; I haven't unpacked the baseball players yet!

Pro Tourney set, triple weight, bag, vinyl board. Would like a Wellington Staunton ($$$$). I plane to etch one of my glass end tables into a chess table.

It's a sickness folks.
Yep.
A Noj Dubrovnik, a plastic Dubrovnik, a BCE Eastern tournament, a Staunton 4" in rosewood, a Zagreb, several travel sets, even a kitsch Franklin Mint 'Waterloo' & yes even a crazy set bought in Las Vegas [the King is a stack of chips]. I'm sure there will be more in the future.
Unfortunately there appears to be no effective medication!

Just three...
- The usual tournament-style plastic Staunton set (weighted pieces, vinyl roll-up board, clock, and carrying case).
- Inexpensive wooden set and folding board of the sort sold at Barnes & Noble. Nothing fancy but nice enough for the $30-something price. This is sometimes useful since it requires somewhat less table space than the tournament-style set.
- Wooden set with folding board handmade in Mexico by a relative of an old friend. The pieces are a bit large for the board but I break it out now and then for the sake of variety.

I have a whole bunch of sets but my favorite is a leather board made by Katherein Louise:

I think this guy got the same exact board from her:

I like that the light squares are not too light on leather boards but you need to be careful not to get them wet.
I generally only like staunton sets. But the exception that proves the rule is this set

I have a little one made by her. Very nice and satisfying to play on.
