I dunno about Steans book, but I have 2 books by Euwe and don't recommend them for your rating. I guess that makes Stean the winner from your library.

I'd highly recommend Irving Chernev's "Logical Chess Move by Move" and "The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played" used, PB, from amazon.

I second "The Most Instructive...", and also suggest "Fine's The Middle Game in Chess"

Maybe 1600-1700 USCF as a good place to get practical use of Euwe's books. Of course anyone could get use out of them but one plods along if the foundation doesn't support the material.

then does anyone has Simple Chess by Michael Stean?? what rating players would you all recommend to read???

i've just bought stean's book from amazon, it was only £5.17 including postage. worth taking a punt on it for that much no matter what your rating.

if you're still curious about it in a week or so i can let you know my impressions.

i've been working though stean's book for the last couple of hours and so far i think it's great. i think most chess players could get something out of it. it's not completely billy basic but the annotations are all clear and seem very instructional.

I just finished Stean's and learned a lot from it. His example games are crystal clear, very well chosen. I'm not rated, and if I were it wouldn't be very high, but his book helped me understand what people are talking about. I needed someone to show me how an outpost worked, or how to use an open file. Stean's book was very helpful.

1700-1800

I guess .

And lower rated can read Stean.

Max's books are available freely I think.
