If you use that free system for a while and decide you need to upgrade to Fritz 12, you can always do that.
I have both. I got F-12 last month and have already played almost a hundred games on it since then. It is a wonderful learning tool and it's strength in "Friend Mode" goes up and down according to how good you are. But having a Diamond on here also just gives me unlimited access to all the stores of information this site holds. Both together have improved my chess greatly.

Fritz = A tool like a nicely crafted hammer.
Chess.com membership = A 1-year membership to a carpentry school (where you learn how to use bang nails into stuff ... even when a hammer isn't around :) )
To be honest, the best feature of diamond was chess mentor and I've grown out of needing that. I can use computer workout for endgame things and I enjoy playing against Fritz and being able to analyse games or selective positions.
I would choose Fritz but I have never had a premium membership. Fritz is great for analyzing games, better than the analysis the site provides from what I understand.
It depends on what you want. Some people like Chess Mentor, videos, etc. However, if I were to upgrade, it would be because I spend alot of time playing games here, and because I want to support the site.

I would buy diamond here it would be better value for money and they have other things here that would improve your chess. Don't forget to look about though on other chess servers so that you know you are getting good value for money.
I*ve got both but if I had to I would choose the one that was able to broadcast the Carlsen vs. World match and that was playchess (Fritz).
A diamond membership here or Fritz? And also, what is the difference between the fritz sold on amazon and the one sold on chessbase.com, other than the price?
