What was the chess book selection for beginners and intermediates like when you were growing up?

The changes over time for the types of resources available for new and intermediate players to learn has always interested me.

When you were young and starting out in chess, what were the major chess books that newer players used to learn? What were the standard texts that people would suggest to each other?

We were lucky as we had a lot of fantastic danish chess books by Bent Larsen, Jens Enevoldsen, Bjørn Nielsen etc. We also had Nimzowitschs Mein System (My System) in Danish.

Larsens translation af Kotov and Keres' classic Kunsten at vinde i skak (The Middle-Game in Chess) is probably the single chess book that have influenced me the most.

I´m 65 years old. My first chess book was "Hur man spelar schack" (How to play chess) by swedish international GM Gideon Ståhlberg. It was/is a good book for beginners. The next book I read was Irving Chernev´s Logical Chess - Move by Move which still is one of my favourites. Then I read Emanuel Lasker´s Common Sense in Chess. I haven´t learned much since...
