I don’t know. I’ve heard that the prices for Soviet chess sets have skyrocketed in the last years, so me getting late into the hobby, my sense of the value of chess sets is based on inflated prices. But I guess the current state of affairs reflects the perceived value of chess sets at the moment. It may fluctuate over time.
I focus more on how much a chess set is worth to me. Many absolutely stunning and for me desirable chess sets are sadly beyond what I’m comfortable spending. Also, although my wife is into chess sets as well, she wouldn’t be happy if I casually spent $500 on a chess set for myself.
