Hi,

Where to buy* quality & correct size tournament chess set?

I'm looking on amazon list but some review says that the size is small, the bottom is not flat, smell like thinner, etc.

We are planning to buy chess sets for the federation and we want chess set that is good quality. we have some very good peices that feels very solid, heavy and doesn't feel plastic.

where to buy good quality tournament chess sets?

Thank you and more power to chess.com

There is more information needed to answer this question.

First, wich Federation you are talking about?

Second, what is your budget?... this is, how much you have and how many sets you are planing to get.

Mostly any solid plastic set on staunton design that is somewhere 3.7 inches tall should do.

Look for 2.25 inch squares on the boards and 3.75 inch king height sets.  That should suit you fine.  You probably also want weighted (double, triple etc.) weighted pieces.  Then you are just shopping for material, design, and cost, all of which are down to taste.

As a rule of thumb, the board should be about 1/2" larger than the diameter of the king. So, for a 2.25" board, I'd go with a 1.75" diameter king. So long as king is 3.5" to 4.5" tall, the set should fit perfectly.

I also like to size the pawns to the boards as well. After all, half the pieces on the board are pawns. If they're undersized, it doesn't matter how good the back row looks, the set will look disproportioned. I like it when the pawns are about 55% the size of the sqauare (2.25" x .55 = 1.24").

So, for a 2.25" board, I'd look for a set with a 1.75" diameter king and 1.25" diameter pawns.

For a comparison, the first picture below shows a set with a 1.5" diameter king on a 2" board (1/2" larger than king). The pawns have a standard 1" diameter, or about 50% of the square. It looks a bit sparse. Even more so as the game progresses and the pieces spread out across the board.

The second picture shows the same set with 1.125" pawns (56% of the square). To my eye, this looks more balanced.
