Yeah I like the NOJ too but there's no way I'm spending that much right now. Maybe when my kid Finish college or something. Speaking of my kid, we did an unboxing video of CB Dubrovnik together.

That was quite possibly the cutiest thing ever. You melted my GFs heart with that one. Please keep making videos!

Hello everyone! Looks like Chessbazaar introduced their second version of stained crimson Dubrovnik and adjudicating from the photos the set looks spectacular to me. Looks like this set is based on a custom order. Perhaps that custom order originated from one of the forum members here? I indeed prefer ebony wood for the dark pieces. Apart from that CB has improved the design of its knight, I like the new look.

Thx 4 sharing.

Can't wait to order when they (if?) start the production of the sheesham/boxwood 3.6" set.

Chessbazaar now has a new Dubrovnik set which has the correct five wall rook. Just make sure you look carefully.

The 5 parapets vs 6 parapets saw the correction after the first run about a year ago. They are also as far as I know sealing the crimson stain this time around. Other than that I have no idea why the India carvers can not get the knight right.

There's a  Zagreb-style set by "indoeshop" (perhaps now suppliers to chessbazaar?) that I find very eye-catching but I'm interested in others' opinions:

From your picture above, I find the bases are a bit too narrow, which will reduce their stability. My favorite Zagreb style set is the one from the Chess House (see link below). With the exception of the Zagreb style knight, the remaining pieces in this set are patterned after the Dubrovnik. If the design strikes your fancy, you get the best of both worlds, Zagreb and Dubrovnik in one set! Sort of a "mashup." Their massive bases, and generous weighting, the entire set weighs 62 oz., will provide you with an extremely stabile set -- with no whimpy pawns. [As the bandito says in the classic film, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, "We don't need no stinkin' whimpy-pawns."] In fact, I've made it my mission to rid the chess world of whimpy pawns. "Four pawns to the square?" Sorry FIDE, that's bunkum and balderdash!

P.S. The 4.0" set pictured above is available on eBay for $135 with FREE shipping from India.

I see what you're saying about the bases and I kindof agree, but part of what I really liked about the indoeshop set I posted (also available ~$89 on ebay) was the high contrast between the black and white, especially on the finials for the king, queen and bishop. Of course, maybe that's just the professional stock photo I'm looking at and the real set wouldn't be quite as pretty...

Wish I could send mine back and get a new crimson one. I hope if you order one the stain doesn't come off in your hands. I hope they sealed it this time.  Never ever heard of any stain coming off in a person's hand on any stained piece of wood unless it was stained improperly and never sealed.  14 months later the crap still comes off.  That is about the only gripe I have and still have with CB. Offering me another set at 30% off doesn't cut it as they offered that for 3 months to anyone. What a bogus offer for me it was.  Yes still sour grapes with CB.

Mike, I've got just the thing for handling that crimson chess set. Smile

TundraMike

ha ha Lou. What burns me is something with that degree of faulty workmanship should be unacceptable and have been replaced for no charge and no charge to ship it back. I surely know that one set left many buyers with a bad taste and they lost a lot of business over it.  Don't need the crimson gloves as I do not play with it.  Mine was a 4" special edition only two made and I would sell it for $125 + shipping. Never used it once. paid $200 or $225 can't remember.

I would definitely choose a set from House of Staunton.

Their knights are far more detailed, and their bishops are better.

HOS and CB sets look totally different to me.

Chess Bazaar's knight with big head lacks craftmanship, and it looks like a anime hero "Ultra man".

It doesn't look like a knight.

It is an Ultra man head.

Hey guys, choosing a wooden chess set is not a matter of price!

It is your life-time companion!

Buying inferior chess set because it is a little bit cheaper?

It doesn't make sense to me.

I prefer the HoS Dubrovnik and I purchased a boxwood/ebonized last November.  However, one of the pawns developed a crack, and I was required to return the cracked pawn in order to get a "free" replacement.  I had an issue with a Zagreb '59 rook upon receiving the set and HoS sent a replacement without the requirement to ship the defective piece back to them.  So, HoS changed their policy regarding replacement. -Gg

Figure Dubrovnik from CB is very bad copy. The best copy of figure  DUBROVNIK is near 1000usd.

Knight is handmade.

Without a doubt, it's the Rolls Royce of Dubrovniks. And as soon as I hit the lottery (ha ha), I'm going to buy me a few.

OMGChess14

Of the two I would pick the HOS set.  The CB quality and consistency looks worse, the rook looks anemic, and the knight looks terrible.  I generally dislike Dubrovnik sets because the knight looks weird and I strongly dislike kings without crosses, though.  I have a large preference for Zagrebs over Dubrovniks, though I wouldn't kick either...off the chess board, so to speak.

That last bit isn't really relevant, and it's definitely just personal taste, but it's how I feel every time i see people hugging the Dubrovnik set, so I threw it in.

Hi NM Reb Laughing. You can't go wrong with the Noj Knights. The only thing they're missing is a patina. It's like going back in time to buy a Dubrovnik ...
