I have improved by roughly 600 rating points in a year just by playing near daily. My puzzles have gone from 700ish to 2400. I like to read chess puzzle books and I always ask for tips from stronger players, or ask where I made my losing mistake. 
I don't really have a high enough rating to teach anyone above 100 rating but I think persistence pays off.
