I have discovered a way to beat that bug. On the very first move instead of pressing 'next' to get your free move just make a move. It only works on the very first move. After that it may still not record it and so go back and deliberately make a bad move for the first move. After that it will record you as having completed the lesson.
If a lesson has all free moves, chess mentor does not record your progress of having completed the lesson. Then when you look at the courses, some you have completed will not say 100% leading you to go back to finish it.
