You've been a member for six days and haven't played any games yet.

The only way to start playing is to start playing.

it is better to play against human opponents. people registered here to play, so dont think that you are wasting their time. here at match making, you will be actually match against opponents close to your level. at novice level, the best way you can do to improve is learn different kinds of tactical themes. after that solve tactics problems.

I think that when you start playing online you should remember that when you start with a 1200 rating, this is not actually the rating where you face other newbies. Even though it's the starting rating, it's already way in to the 75th percentile of people playing on chess.com. Apart from the occasional first timer most of the 1200s know the basics, some theory and are already familiar enough not to blunder every other piece. Why I'm saying this is because when I first started playing on chess.com I got really demotivated after losing every game to people I thought were beginners like me. My rating plummeted all the way down to 671 at my worst and I thought I must be the worst chess player ever to play this game. It was very demotivating and I almost thought that chess is not a game for me.

Truth is that if you are just learning the game, you will probably take a constant beating for a while, before you get to play against other people rated 600-800. I think that is the real beginner rating (instead of 1200) and you shouldn't feel too bad losing points in the beginning. It's much more important to try to learn from your mistakes and practice. You will eventually get stronger and stronger and start to increase in the ratings as well. Chess is a tough mistress and requires some willpower from a newbie. But if you get over the first part of "I feel so stupid and I don't understand anything" phase, you will be on your way to learning and improving! :-)

Good luck and welcome to the world of chess - be careful or it might take over your life.
