What am I trying to solve?

Sorry if this is a silly question. I'm not new to chess, but I am new to trying to get good at it.
I was trying unsuccessfully to solve a chess problem and in the end had to get the computer to do it and it's 'solution' was not to checkmate. It was to take the rook, which did not amount to even check.
My question is, "How am I supposed to know what I'm trying to achieve by solving the board?"
I had assumed that 'solve' meant 'win'. This seems to NOT be the case.
Am I just being thick?
