This is not true.

Progress in the "first world" is only in one direction: greater respect for individuals and their right to be who they want to be.

When my son was in grade school the teachers had to respect the students wishes and their "right to be who they want to be". He thought it was ridiculous so he made an example out of the teachers nonsense. He identified as an Apache attack helicopter. He said he was fast, he could fight, and he always wanted to fly. So he demanded they recognize how he identifies.

And of course, being the lemmings they are, the teacher did exactly that. The teacher had to respect his wishes. All the kids laughed at the teacher so hard and she was so embarrassed she probably suffered some emotional issue. But for the kids the solution was simple. Don't do something stupid and you won't be laughed at.

I'll take 'things that didn't happen' for 500, please

You can bet everything you have if you like. You may not be aware of what's going on in schools these days. And I didn't even mention what the boys did when they found out women's hygiene products were placed in the boys bathroom. If you've ever been around teenage boys, you don't have to wonder too much.

Consider that a daily double.

As a trans woman, I am unfortunately aware of the transphobia and homophobia in schools, and how uneducated cis people can be

I think you may have been misled. Nobody is scared of either persuasion. It's just that when you get a large group of teenage boys, you intentionally subject them to things like women's hygiene products in boys bathrooms, you have to expect a certain predictable result.

No different than when, during class, a student "identifies" as a cat. Or anything else that they clearly are not. Including Apache attack helicopters. There is going to be a very predictable amount of backlash, ridicule, and disruption. Bringing this unwarranted disruption to the attention of the staff, and making an example out of it, is perfectly within the rights of the students.

no one is identifying as a cat or a helicopter

I have no idea. I'm talking about what they identified as a few years ago in our local school system. In Oregon. Right now? I don't know. Maybe they've stopped doing that. But my guess is not much has changed, as evidenced by Oregon law concerning such things.

No one ever identified that way, although they may have made jokes about it. Unfortunately the lawmakers are uneducated on these issues, and completely ignoring the science and facts, and using these laws as a way to distract from what's actually going on (attacking women's rights, refugees, etc)

The jokes were made BECAUSE they identified that way. There is no other reason for ridicule and the backlash. It's ironic that in this instance, it was the students that had to remind the teacher of the science and facts. And remind her that NO, that person is actually NOT a cat. And that person is NOT an Apache attack helicopter, and that person is NOT a male. Teachers should not be science deniers.

trans women are women, trans men are men, non-binary people are non-binary. those are the facts. no-one is a cat or a helicopter, although those transphobic jokes have been around for ages, and everyone is sick and tired of them

So, if someone says he is a cat, he is not a cat, but a man who says he is a woman, is actually a woman?

It was only a joke to the other students. The staff, apparently, had to take it seriously. Oregon law even now requires women's hygiene products be made available in boys restrooms in public schools. No, that's not a joke. It's the law. And when a student demands the staff address them according to how they "identify" (even if it's a cat or a helicopter) you have to expect some ridicule.

There is no possible way these things are NOT going to be made into jokes. Because, let's be honest, everything about it is a joke.

Got is, then you for clarification.

That is stupid and transphobic. 'cat' is not a gender. woman is.

people are the gender they say they are

I'm not sure in todays world you are allowed to make that sort of biased judgement. If someone says their gender is cat, you have to respect and accept that. You do not get to decide what gender someone else is.

I heard somewhere there are something like 52 genders. I don't know if cat is one of those, but if there really are 52, who are you to proclaim number 53 is not cat? Do you realize how transphobic your views are to those who identify as cat?

I bet you're lots of fun around followers of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (blessed be Their Noodly Appendage) and the Church of Satan, too.
I do think there's a difference between taking something to its logical but extreme conclusion to see where the cracks show up, and taking teenage-boy bullying as something to be applauded.
Further, there's a difference between punching up and punching down. FSM followers poking holes at the privilege enjoyed by Christians in the US is a pretty far cry from "I identify as a helicopter" trolls making things even more difficult for a small group of people that is already marginalized legally, socially, economically and has one of the highest rates of suicide among any followed group. And it's no real surprise that it would be teenage boys and their fans doing the punching-down.

So, if someone says he is a cat, he is not a cat, but a man who says he is a woman, is actually a woman?

if someone says they are a woman, they are a woman. I am a woman

By your logic, if I say I am a cat, I am a cat and I should be allowed to play in chess tournaments as a cat.

Got is, then you for clarification.

That is stupid and transphobic. 'cat' is not a gender. woman is.

people are the gender they say they are

Reported for transphobia, cat is a real gender, and it is on a spectrum.

That is a good point. The kids were doing nothing but taking these views to their logical extreme conclusion. If a teacher, or other staff member, were required to address students as cats or helicopters (or in some cases male) then were does it stop? That is the point. The students were not fine with science denier teachers trying to conduct some sort of twisted social experiment. That's not what school is for.

There is a valid point that there is a small minority of students who are in fact confused or imbalanced or otherwise different when it comes to things like this. But does it make sense to alienate and disrupt the other 99%? I think the policy should be to ignore these demands and instead conduct school proceedings in accordance with what the local district wants.

If a school district has enough parents that want teachers to address some students as cats and helicopters and males, when clearly they are not, then that's what they should do. However, if a district has parents (and kids) that overwhelmingly reject those things, that should also be respected.
