After 1. a3 e5 the correct move is 2. c4.

1. a3 is Anderssen's opening. Miles beat Karpov with it.

One of the ideas is to transpose into a colors-reversed version of some opening that's normally played with the Black pieces, but with an extra move already made.

For example, after 1. a3 e5 White can answer 2. c4 and play a colors-reversed Sicilian, with the Najdorf move already made (and an extra tempo).

Or after 1. a3 d5 White can answer 2. Nf3 c5 3. c4 d4 4. b4 and play a colors-reversed Benko Gambit with an extra move... not a trivial matter in a gambit opening. Or he can head into a colors-reversed King's Indian and play the Panno system, which required a6 by Black... again, with an extra move since he is playing the White pieces.

@blueemu Miles played 1..a6, after 1.e4 in that game against Karpov, he did not play 1.a3.

Right up there with  'Pass' as a great first move . Seriously though, after 2 e4 I thinking, Im thinking a reversed scotch, kings gambit, or vienna game, might make a3 not so hot. After 2 c4 maybe a KIA.  Not losing but after like move 2 its +/====?
