Well, let's see.

Does 2 g4 develop a piece? No.
Does 2 g4 control the centre? No.
Does 2 g4 improve the safety of your king? No.

Therefore, 2 g4 is not a good move. Also, 2...d5 seems like a very strong counter, adhering to the rule of countering a flank attack with a centre attack.

To be fair the same exact thing could be said and has been said by me about the Sicilian Defense 1.c5

1...c5 prevents 2 d4 so does help control the centre.

But 2. c3 forever cements white’s control of the center

While it is respectable, black has fully equal results against the Alapin.

The proof of any move is in the results it gets. Play 2.g4 in as many games as you can and come back and tell us about it.

Mr. Bluestone: Why are you taking umbrage? And what, precisely is umbrage? I have not said a word against g4 is any form, I merely suggested that the OP play the move in a bunch of games and then come to his own conclusions. The scientific method!

"Umbrage is kind of like aspirin. When some people get a headache, they take aspirin. I take umbrage."

Good one!

I always think of umbrage as a kind of combination of humming and outrage

Reminds me of a 'trick' I once saw happen in a children's OTB tournament. Kid played 2. Qh5 and asked his opponent ''Hey, is there also a sticker underneath your king?'' so the kid took his king and checked and then the White player screamed ''You touched your king, now you got to move it!'' and then the arbiter came over and told the kid he indeed had to play 2...Ke7 now. Well, rip.

That's a bad arbiting decision. (A good arbiter would rule that the king had been touched with the intention of adjusting it on its square, and thus the touch-move rule would not apply. Said arbiter would also rule that white had been trying to gain an unfair advantage, and apply some sort of penalty. Two minutes off white's clock would probably do the trick.)

I take umbrage! Just because 1.e4 e5 2.g4 is a lemon, doesn't mean that all lines with 2.g4 are no good. There is 1.d4 Nf6 2.g4!? This ridiculous thing has the curious name 'Gibbins-Wiedenhagen' gambit. I don't know who Gibbins or Wiedenhagen were. Maybe a couple of lunatics, for all I know. It's also sometimes called the Bronstein gambit, I think, although Bronstein probably wasn't too crazy about having his name on it. Anyway, there is a certain logic behind it: White gets a nice center after 2...Nxg4 3.e4, and black's knight is attacked. But it's not really worth a pawn. Both 3...d6 and d5 are fine for black. But, like most of these goofy openings, you can get away with it once in a while.

In this game, black is probably okay until he decided to transfer his queen to the queenside with 13...Qd8. Maybe.......

This shows how having a rationale that makes sense is not enough to make a line good.

LC0 assesses 1. d4  Nf6 2. g4? to be the 25th best for white in the position. The two moves that are assessed as clearly worse than 2. g4 are 2. Bh6?? and 2. Kd2?. The Omega gambit 2. e4? is viewed as just slightly worse (I have just learnt the name of this bad line).

So, I did quick analysis with Lco for 400 kilo nodes, the winning chance statistics are like that!

Try to avoid moving wing pawns early in the game, especially when it weakens your kingside.
