Pushing in the opening with 1.h4 allows you to catch your opponent off guard, who is usually accustomed to a repertoire of classic openings. Contrary to what you might think, 1.h4 is a smart choice. In this comprehensive theory, I will explain the ideas I've developed on 1.h4.
There are already several names for 1.h4—Desprez, Kadas, Beaver Claw, Anti-Borg Opening, Samurai Opening, and Harry's Opening—but there is no definitive theory other than the one I'm presenting to you, the result of an in-depth study I completed in mid-January 2025.
It should be noted that 1.h4 is not an opening, just as 1.e4 is not; it's a move that leads to various openings with their respective variations.
For the different openings we'll be discussing, I've coined a name, inspired by the names of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, since I live in that province, and openings are usually named after states. There's another reason I chose Venice as the main theme of 1.h4: the pawn extending along the rook file visually recalls the long shaft of a gondola oar.
NB: This page is under construction; I'm adding lines every day.
With 1.h4, Black can assume that White isn't familiar with center theory, or that he's attempting a bold attack. Black's most common responses are therefore 1...d5 or 1...e5, a diagram showing the possible responses to 1.h4, drawing on classical theory.
Some also play 1...h5 to immediately block the pawn's advance, either because they simply don't know how to respond, or because they also want to be sure they don't make a mistake by countering symmetrically.
Other common responses are 1...c5, a clever move that advances a pawn on the opposite side of 1.h4, immediately setting up a counterattack on the queenside. 1...b6 is also rarely used, though perhaps it does not seem like a strong plan, as it slightly weakens Black's queenside castling, but if the 1.h4 pawn were to advance, supported by a strategic attack, Black's kingside would also be weakened...
