hi everyone.just want to know what u all play against 1.e4,  e5 or c5 ,and why.currently i play c5 and i am happy playing it but if u feel e5 is better please tell/show me why.thanks

Which Sicilian Variation? That is c5 As for your question c5 tends to be better but e5 is much easier to learn and also easier to play OTB.

Neither is purelly better, it could be said that 1...c5 offers better winning chances, it could also be said that it does so for white aswell though.

It's a matter of what you feel gives you the positions you want and/or feel comfortable with. I like to play ...c6, the Caro-Kahn myself.

I alwys play c5. The sicilian is promissing. c5 is where the future is at, I better start practicing it right away, if the sicilian is used properly it's a super weapon. I don't play chess that long but it seems like the way to go. Especially against newbies, I think the siclian is a nightmare if you know how to play it.

You do realize that we are talking about a chess move, and not Iron Man, right? The way you put it makes 1...c5 sound like a religious object.

Which of course it is.

It depends on who you're playing. At a low rating the sicilian is useless because everyone will simply avoid it and play an anti-sicilian line.

Using this logic I could argue that at a low rating 1...e5 is also useless because everyone will avoid the mainlines of the Ruy Lopez and instead play sidelines like the king's gambit or scotch, when your study time will again go to waste, and when someone finally does wheel out a mainline Ruy you will be lost as what to do.

I do believe 1...e5 to be a better move for players under 2000 however. The lower you go in rating, the more you should learn the open games IMO because the moves are logical and principled. Just remember that at low levels you will be unlikely to demonstrate your theoretical knowledge in any opening, whether it be the Sicilian or 1...e5. This is because your opponent will probably go out of book first. Therefore you won't need to study too much theory until you improve and therefore can work on tactics most of the time instead. Get a good grasp of opening principles by learning the open games as black!

I prefer c5, but I hate some of the anti-sicilians, mainly when they just develop with things like Nf3 Nc3 Bc4 O-O etc, neither move it better though, I also hate playing against the sicilian so ususally play 1.d4. There are some very annoyning lines in e4 e5 like the petroff and berlin which prove to be very drawish so as mentioned already the sicilian decreases drawing chances, e5 is certainly easier to understand

online (cc) games: 1. e4 c5 the sicilian leading to the najdorf variation preferably (2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6).

live (otb) games: 1. e4 d5 the scandinavian (2. exd5 Qxd5 3. Nc3 Qa5 or 2. d5 c5 which surprisingly happens often i find).

Against 1...e4 I play a Sicilian Dragon if I can because I love the sharp lines and the option of either building a solid defence and attacking white's centre later, or launching into early complexities if I'm in the mood for that.

LiamMuRpHy

thanks for all your opinions

MrNimzoIndian

I would spend a good proportion of Sicilian study time preparing my defence against the c3 Sicilian...although learning a line against the Morra Gambit should be an early priority. Anti Sicilians in my experience make up two thirds of 1e4 c5 games....but Anti Sicilians should be welcomed !

SchofieldKid

try c6 the Caro Kann , my favorite

For my reply, here's a game I played against the site computer on medium. I'm black!

collinsdanielp

I play 1.e4 as white and 1...c5 as black.  When I play the Sicilain as black the only lines I fear are the mainline open Sicilians, which is what I play when I am white and see 1...c5 played against me.  As white I am now doing much worse against 1...e5 than I do against 1...c5.  Both are obviously solid openings.  I prefer to play 1...c5 myself but I dislike like playing against 1...e5 more.

LiamMuRpHy

would anyone like to play against me as white in two games.in one it will be 1.e4 e5 and the other 1.e4 c5?????  in the game i play better i will use that opening.

Akireta

There's little for me to say here that hasn't already been said, but here are a few thoughts that have influenced my play -

I started off as (many Fischer based) players do as a primarily 1. e4 player... ultimately I abandoned this from my repertoire for serious play.

Why?

Because where I was playing everyone seemed to play the French (1. e4 e6) which I hated playing against, and I figured that since people had booked up in this area it would be inefficient to follow suit. Ultimately I discovered that the 1. d4 systems suited my style better anyway (particularly things like the the semi slav).

But of course with the black pieces you inevitably face all the main systems (1. e4, 1. d4, 1. c4, 1. Nf3 etc) so you need to be prepared. I agree that the Sicilian is the most fun to play and I play exclusively the Najdorf (when people let me) with good results. Of course if you're in a tournament situation requiring a draw then it's not a bad idea to prepare something less dicey (some ...e5 variations, ...c6, ...e6 etc.) But if you know what you're doing you can just use the Sveshnikov Sicilian for the same effect.

In short - if you're aggressive, play the Sicilian as black or some other vicious line, and if you're going to play 1. e4, try to get at least one system in your head for each of the major responses.

Sorry for ranting for so long,
Akireta.

LiamMuRpHy

thanks for ur comment,i have already choosen to play the sicilian, as i am an aggressive style player

gunners1000

i personally rather e5 because c5 is to dangerous as black or white  and because there is a lot less theory in e5
