iv played both c5 and e5 extensivly against e4 and i can tell you im never going to play e5 again.. its just sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo passive it just got to the point where i couldnt play it anymore... sure its technically more solid... but this is only in theory... and if your going by what 'theory' says then your also going to be only hoping for a 'theoretical', solid draw.. so i just stoped playing it.. play 1...c5 and win!! >:OOO

Why don't you just play both off and on? I do the same thing with my white openings.

I also like d5, exd5 but some times i play queen takes d5 instead of nf6 just for surprise factor.  Its a game it should be fun.  Play what you like.

I did some analysis on a chess database nearly 10 years ago and discovered that 1 in 5 games is a Sicilian.

I also discovered that 1.e4 e5 scores  c54% white, 46% black

and ....1.e4 c5 scores 51% White, 49% Black

So the Sicilian is a better bet for Black.

DRAWS: 1 in 3 of all games is a draw, c33%, but with the Sicilian it drops to c27% if I remember right. If you want to win as Black, go for the Sicilian.

I found in my games that it is more difficult to learn the Sicilian and needs some study, but once one has it, it's an opening for life. Despite all that, I also sometimes answer 1.e4 with ...e5 !

Recently the Checkhover variation (4. Qxd4 instead of Nxd4) has grown on me when playing White vs. the Sicilian ... might be a bit inferior on GM level, but at my 1300 level will stop those fellows cold who have learned their 20 moves of Najdorf or whatever and want to beat me with their extensive opening knowledge :) Yesterday scored a nice OTB win with it.

I think e5 and c6 are more solid than Sicilian. If you are a beginner, you should not play Sicilian because it contains lots of theories. e5 is very good opening especially if you want to play solid( until and unless your opponent plays king's gambit) and you want to equalise. You should only play Sicilian once you reach certain level in chess, for example blitz rating of 1700, or tactics trainer rating of 2000, that's the best choice for you. You should be extremely good at tactics if you want to play c5, remember that.

Best of luck

"The French Defence. In my younger years I used to consider it at best a second-rate opening, and I once even lost a bet with one of my friends, and as a result had to play 1... e6 in all my games with Black in a Super-GM tournament. Fortunately my friend was greedy, and took money instead. I believe that both 1...c5 and 1...e5! are better choices," - Magnus Carlsen

As white, I mainly play English and 1) d4 because it gives me trauma when facing Sicilian if I bumped my head to proceed making a move with 1) e4.
In 10 games, I usually play two games of 1) e4 half of those will be probably non-Sicilian or non- 1) ... e5 (i.e. French, Caro-Kann, Modern, Pirc, etc.). 1) d4 is often in lieu of English in the last 8 games of 10. Blitz and Rapid encourages me to play 1) e4 if the adversary responds with 1) ... e5 so I can play with fave King's Gambit.

I am in exclusive notion practicing both 1) ... e5 and Sicilian when playing as black.

If I play 1) e4 c5 2) Nf3 d6 = I am an adherent of playing Najdorf variations of staple line and sub-lines. Also, I play 1) e4 c5 2) Nf3 Nf6 sometimes Accelerated Dragon is better than the 2) ... d6 Dragon. I dedicate my study theory extensively both on Najdorf and Accelerated Dragon.

1) ... e5 is a little bit of janky. It is whether a Vienna, Ruy Lopez or Italian what revolves to your game plan. Pawn break is in 1) ... e5 requires more preparations before committing the move for pawn breaks. OTB shows psychological pressure when using Sicilian rather 1) ... e5 or others.

Sicilian is probably the best to invest time while as earlier (assuming one's understand the basic principles and endgames) because meeting Anti-Sicilians or misplaced booked moves (such as Bowlder Attack) is very common under 1800 and entirely pure tactics and mind-juggling sequences are always present in the board.

And in my opinion, Sicilian is best for classical and rapid time-control OTB. 1) ... e5 is overall better for all time-control if one's want to play sound and solid game.

I’m a c4 and c5 players as well and agree on some points.

Furthermore, I find the middle game planning aspect of the game is easier from imbalance positions.
