If engines have some Book of debutes then they may choose a move only because it was played and have some winning history... Anyway, what engines say about Qd6? What evaluation?

It's not even in Komodo's Top 8 moves. After Qd6  it proposes 7.Nf3 +1.80.

However, it thinks it's quite playable before it reaches 18 ply, which means it's a good move for us humans.

Criss90

You are human?? :)

We seem to have a move, e6.

Agreed.

So e6 then?

I think we've found consensus.

Here we go.

Tough choice here. Nf3 gives back the pawn, but allows quick castling and probably a strong attack, but I wouldn't take the chance against the silicium beasts. So the real question is whether I want Qe2 Qe7 to be played before fxe6. I hope the endgame after the queen trade in winning enough, and I play Qe2.

Okay, I'm running Deep Rybka 4 SSE42 X64 first this time, as it is unrepresented here and usually takes significantly longer to mull over a position.

If necessary, I'll run Stockfish later.

MSC157

Quick analysis without engine. Qe7 or Bd6.

Irontiger

I would be quite surprised if there is anything else than ...Qe7 here.

Doggy_Style

Rybka 4 likes Bd6 (+1.00)

(Qe7 second choice)

Shuhister

Qe7? I don't think this will be a choise here... Bd6 or Qd6 are more preferable. With Bd6 we may castle next move. We may regain pawn with next two moves.... I can't see any threats, white are not developed enough. Qd6 also good move - no pin with Bg5 after that. Be7 and Nc6 also possible.

Doggy_Style

Stockfish also like Bd6 (again, Qe7 is second choice).

MSC157

Yeah me! :)

Yup, good picks.

A suggestion to Team Fred. Teach your engine the position. Play some different equal moves a few plys ahead.

And do not forget. :)

I had an opponent play this against me in a casual game. After nf6, I played not the immediate d4, but Be2 first, softening up the already weakened black kingside. He replied h5, and then I played d4. The game lasted about 20 moves and was an easy crush. I've just checked my Hiarcs engine, and it thinks Be2 is good, also.

I'd add that I checked my play after the game and I found it quite accurate. I'm a strong postal player, capable of analysing 30 ply, which most engines cannot do.

Rather different to playing against a plethora of the latest engines, some running on extreme hardware.

On a side note you might find of interest, the 365 opening game "big" database has only two games after 5. c3.

5...Nc6 (2000s players) and 5...cxd4 (ratings not shown) - Black lost both those games.

Yes, a valuable resource that I have bookmarked.

I must say that the "Big" database contains some dodgy stuff, but that's quite useful for ruling out certain moves.

For those that don't have it:

http://www.365chess.com/

The registration is simple, the service free (up to a generous point), and you don't ever (in my experience) get pestered to upgrade.

LoekBergman

Using Sjeng 11.2 I get Qe7. It doesn't look at any other move.

MSC157

Since we can use everything, chessbase.com has even larger database if I'm not mistaken.

chessterd5

I vote for 7)...,Nc6 Thank you.
