What opening is this 1.e4/e5 2.d4/e4 x d5?

It's as good an opening for a beginner to experiment with and learn from as the next.

5pin

The slightly dubious center game, leading to Qxd4 (the center game proper, considered a touch underambitious and passive and mostly abandoned at the highest level because black can equalize quite easily.  In my experience, it has the same problem as the scotch game, it breaks tension too early, and makes it diffucult to pressure blacks position.  Still a good opening for club players however (I would actually recommend the scotch game more), as it's easier for black to screw up then white.

Alternatively, it leads to the danish gambit, with c3 offering another pawn, which declined in popularity after the Schlechter defense.  After 3. c3 dxc3 4. Bc4 cxb2 5. Bxb2 d5! black will gambit back a pawn to give himself time to organize a defense, and end up with an equal position with none of that gambiteering buisness.  4. Nxc3 (the alekhines variation) isn't too bad on the other hand, but it isn't that good either.
